I don't think I'd like a job working a cash register at a Dollar General, but it sounds like the man needs to pursue a different line of work. That, or the management needs to train him better to deal with the checkout system. Calling the cops on a customer because of frustration with coupons is sheer idiocy. It's likely to result in bad publicity for the store and also to cost you your job. Being branded a racist is bad for future employment prospects, besides. Why didn't the guy just ask for a manager to help him when he felt like he was in over his head?

I dont shop DG so I dont know the procedure but at all other places I shop digital coupons either come off and the cashier cant do anything about it or they dont and the cashier cant do anything about it. Sometimes a manager will offer to manually lower the price of an item or CS will make good on the coupon after the fact. But I never expect it, I make the decision to buy or not based on the price reflected after the digital coupon does not come off. Is DG different, do cashiers need to *approve* digital coupons or something? Is there a way for the cashier to prompt, or stop coupons from coming off?

This seems like another case of a store worker being labeled a racist when a couponer gets the all-too-frequent cashier attitude and is asked to leave/ stop recording, refuses and then gets the cops called on her for refusing to comply on private property with the property agents request. Sure its more click-baity to label it racism but we've all experienced problems at the register. Its our actions after that likely dictate if the cops are called.

And, yes, I agree that many cashiers/ managers at most stores could use a retrain on how to nicely deal with couponer issues. But this couponing incident isnt special IMO.

ETA: Ive watched the video now. Towards the end when the manager is on the phone with Felicia, does he say "African American" and the couponer says "Its black" I had a hard time hearing him and that part wasnt well captioned. I could clearly hear her reply though. Didnt a similar exchange occur in the CVS faux Depends coupon fiasco?

Thanks. I did not realize that. He behaved like a new employee in the video.
And monkeydawn, I thought the "it's black" was a reference to the color of her clothing since it came directly after he described what she was wearing, "blue skirt," and she corrected him. In either case, it was tactless and petty for her to correct a guy who was obviously sufficiently exercised to be on the phone with the police. His description of her was not insulting nor was it improper. The call was basically stupid, though, given the wave of negative publicity it generated.

Still hoping someone chimes in with how digital coupons work at DG.

He just seemed frustrated to me. We dont know what occurred before the video started but only she knew there was a recording for most of it. We are seeing his *true* actions, which dont seem all that outside of the norm for a cashier frustrated with couponers. The worst we see is him accusing her of trying to "pull something". Not great CS but also not newsworthy. I used to get that implication or worse in NY once a month.

Thanks for the clarification. I couldnt clearly hear what he was saying. I'd agree that her saying that is kind of a departure from the way she was otherwise acting on the video, it shows a pettiness.

You put in the phone number you used to create your DG coupon account to redeem the digital coupon.one coupon per account... If you have more then one account you could use the coupon multiple times in separate transactions.

So no cashier intervention possible/ necessary after the cashier inputs the phone number?

If you read the comments on her FB page. She explains what happened.

Apparently a $5/30 Digital Coupon did not come off, so the manager price adjusted two items to make up for it, but then a $3 and a $0.50 digital didn't come off either.. at that point, he refused to adjust again.

Honestly, I've had a $3/15 not come off at DG and the manager wasn't willing to do anything about it. She said there is nothing she can do. So I left my order. This was woman is lucky she got him to take off the $5. It is VERY rare they'll help.

They SHOULD since they advertise the digitals and SHOULD honor it, but they don't.

I don't have an issue with him not adjusting it for the extra $3.50 since that is par for the course.. and in their coupon policy - it does give managers the authority to deny coupons..

But I did not like his commentary towards her.. the part about "taking advantage of the system" (or however he worded it) was over the line.

I've read he was fired.

Customer has to enter thier phone # on keypad( where you swipe your Credit card)

Cashier has nothing to do with---whether or not the Digitals work

why some Digitals do not work---
Sometimes the Customer has forgotten to ADD the item to thier account
Sometimes the Customer picked up the Wrong Size that the Digital is supposed to be for
Sometimes the Customer has Not figured out Math correctly( Example-$5/25 or $5/30 gain)
in most cases, the subtotal has to be $25 or $30 B4 tax
There are times that Digitals just dont work.
There are times that Digitals work on the Wrong size or even a different product( sometimes called a Glitch---rarely see peeps complaining about those, as long as they KNEW about.Smilie

Informed Managers, can fix an item, that the Digital Did not work, IF customer has not paid yet....but even to me its kinda Complicated
different Stores registars might be set up different---I can only share what little I think I know

just my observation
I have sympathy for anyone being a cashier or in Management in todays time----I have been in stores, where Customers are having a Meltdown over coupons ( insert/ip/digitals) Sorry, but the Customer is NOT always right-----Sometimes the cashier or manager is NOT right either,
there are other ways of Solvling the situation, than to Post on FB/IG so you can have peeps side with you, but not always ALL the Correct info

I agree. It's important to keep a reasonable perspective. Sometimes deals you hoped for don't work out. When that happens, you just decline to complete the transaction, and apologize for the problem: "sorry, I had calculated a different total, and I'm afraid I don't want to do this deal after all." And then leave. It's bad strategy to push a problem so hard that you become notable as a problem customer, especially if you intend to frequent that establishment. And remember, that person on the other side of the register has to stand there for 8 hours a day and do this over and over again. Having some compassion and remaining polite goes a long way.

Often, the cashier will respond positively and make necessary adjustments.

Thank you. So basically they work just like all other stores digital coupons and the programming has to be correct and the customer has to get the right item and there is really nothing for the cashier to do either way.

THank you for the FB prospective, I never go there.

I agree, I just decline the trxn if the digital coupons are what make it a deal. And, I am apologetic about it and offer to reshelve my stuff. It costs me almost nothing to take a few seconds to be kind. While there are just some cashiers that are going to hate couponers because of the extra work our method of payment creates, whether the deal works or not, being kind is just the right thing to do. It shouldnt be treated as an opportunity to have a social media payday.
