I purchased the 2-piece 6'6" Medium-Heavy Ugly Stik Elite. This is a strange rod. I love it and I hate it. When it arrived, there was instantly a little regret. The cork instantly looked pretty bad. It is a low grade cork with tons of imperfections and cracks. There is a white bar code label on the rod blank that can not be removed. It is in the blank. The next thing you'll notice is that the eyelets just aren't quite straight. Finally shaking the rod to feel the action, you'll notice the last two inches of handle has no blank inside of it, so it feels as though you could tear it off. Plus the butt cap didn't get enough glue and it peels back in a few areas new from the box. So why don't I hate it?

This beautiful pile of garbage can PROVEN deadlift 20lbs. The eyelets are so crappy that you can just throw it in your trunk without worrying. It has a line rating of 10-20lbs. and a lure rating of 1/4-3/4oz. In reality it throws 2oz. comfortably. The tip is floppy, which helps since the backbone is very rigid in the handle two-thirds of the rod. I love it because it is a rod that can handle most things inshore, it is compact, the eyelets are unlikely to ever break, and it is so different from my other rods. It is just too heavy though. Mine weighs in at 195g (6.9oz). For reference, my Medium Ugly Stik GX2 spinning rod weighs in at 180g (6.4oz.).For being marketed as lighter than a GX2, it has to be within couple grams of a Medium Heavy GX2. It is HEAVY in the hand. It is a good bait-n-wait catfishing rod, but I'd hate to cast it all day long at this weight. It is also usually too expensive for what it is. At $50 it just feels too cheap. The beauty of GX2s is that you can get a rod and reel from WalMart for around $30 sometimes. $50 for just this rod is too much. For less money, you can get a Berkley Lightning Shock Rod that is lighter, plenty strong, and obviously higher quality in the hand. Alternatively you could get a whole Ugly Stik Catfish combo for cheaper and it has a better lure rating and action. This rod just doesn't make sense at the price unless you need a shorter two-piece rod that can deadlift fish over a pier rail or something. At $35, it is interesting, but just be aware of the hefty weight and poor quality.

I love my saltwater ugly stik rod. These look like fresh water only, unfortunately.

There's just no basis for thinking you couldn't use this in saltwater. What in your mind makes this freshwater only? I've never understood looking at a rod and thinking it can only be fished in a certain amount of salinity.

You selected the wrong options. Not all of them are $35.

Salt water rods don't typically have a cork base, from what I've seen. I'm talking about a saltwater surf casting rod, which is what I'm looking for.

Most current rods are using EVA foam because it is cheaper to manufacture and it is more durable than cork. Most bass rods don't even have a cork base now. However, there are literally hundreds of saltwater rods on the market with full cork handles. I fish Jetties and intracoastal canals regularly with these rods. Rinse with fresh water, and you'll have little issue.

For surf, foam is just plain better, but mainly because sand spikes and rod holders eat up cork faster. The "freshwater" Ugly Stik Catfish rod has an EVA foam handle, and it makes a pretty good saltwater rod for almost anything inshore. Either way, these work fine in salt.

The Ugly Stik I have now has a foam base. I agree it's more durable, especially if you're fishing off a rocky jetty.

I got two of these last time they were on Slickdeals. 7' 2 pc Medium. I was kayak fishing and got hung up on a rock with my Penn 3500 spinfisher with 20lb braid. I pulled up and snapped the rod right above the real. I emailed pics and proof of purchase to Shakespeare and have had no response. Just an FYI

It sucks they didn't reply. Pulling from a snag with a bent rod is enough abuse to void most warranties. Unfortunately, you also violated the rod rating. So, if you told them 20lbs. braid, your warranty would also be void:

MODEL # USESP702M
ROD LENGTH
7'
ROD POWER
Medium
NUMBER OF PIECES
2

LURE RATING 1/4-5/8oz.
LINE RATING 6-14lbs.

I have 1 that I inherited from my father that is about 35 years old. I remember him buying it when I was a kid after he broke another rod on a trip. He wanted an unbreakable rod and got one. It is still in really good shape.

Any recommendations on which spinning rod to get? Looking to pair with an Okuma Stratus V 25 with 6 lb line. Mostly fishing for rainbow/cutthroat in lakes.
