Quote :
After the fall of the American Ayatollahs as foretold in Stranger in a Strange Land and chronicled in Revolt in 2100, the United States of America at last fulfills the promise inherent in its first Revolution: for the first time in human history there is a nation with Liberty and Justice for All.

No one may seize or harm the person or property of another, or invade his privacy, or force him to do his bidding. Americans are fiercely proud of their re-won liberties and the blood it cost them: nothing could make them forswear those truths they hold self-evident. Nothing except the promise of immortality...
Enjoy! I haven read this one in years. Cool

Agreed. Fine to read without any other background.

That said, "Stranger in a Strange Land" is one of the finest science fiction novels ever, so you couldn't go wrong reading that one first.

Does this one have parts about boning kids or his own mother like some of his other works?

Where it is common to discuss on the content and quality of the product as well as the quality of the deal...

While perhaps not asked in the most neutral of terms by the other user, I also am interested if anyone with experience can provide comment.

From googling around, it seems this one is earlier in his career when he was less fixated on sexual themes so I'd wager this one has less than others he might be known for.

Still interested if anyone with direct experience can chime in.

This one is the very first in his Lazarus Long series. It is more on "adventures" side with very little of sexual content. Good reading but a bit naive/simple. Take it if you like classic and old sci-fi but, frankly, it is nothing terribly special.

I personally would rate Time Enough for Love (the second one) much higher despite all nonconformistic content. You may disagree with the author on his philosophy but the book is very mature and definitely worth reading. Not for everyone though. Last 3 in the series went downhill.

For me, Heinlein is in my top 5 sci-if authors list. My top 3 of his works are: the moon is a harsh mistress, time enough for love, and, perhaps, stranger in a strange land. Although, it is the hard choice.

If you like something simple and sweet, read The door into summer.

Need more suggestions, what other scifi authors are decent?

It's all about personal preferences, is not it? Smilie

If you look old and classic sci-fi, look at the names from Hugo Award [thehugoawards.org]. I personally prefer authors from 70th and early 80th (maybe because they are from my childhood Smilie ) Clifford Simak, Harry Harrison, Ray Bradbury (though many do not like him), Isaac Asimov, Paul Anderson, etc.

Another one whom I would suggest - Robert Sheckley and his short stories. He did not do well with the larger forms. Neither did he do good during his late years when, I'd say, majority of his work were created under the influence. But his early stories were great. Disclaimer here - I read them in translation and I saw the cases when translations were better than originals Smilie

As for the modern ones - I do not read that much of sci-fi nowadays. From recent ones - I'd like David Weber's Honor series. The first one is even available for free [amazon.com] - you can try it - the series become better as author matures. His Safehold is also readable. Not a huge fan of his other work.

Also, you may look at "The Dark Forest" trilogy. This is from Chinese author (Cixin Liu) and very unusual for Western reader. It is definitely not for everyone but worth looking at.
