The cpu is really weak for a desktop.. I'd hold out for the 8th gen one if possible. 8th gen i7's are 4 cores vs 2. With that said for this form factor it's not a bad price. Personally i'd go for the deskmini from asrock.. similiar price but can put in a much better cpu.

Agreed, the i3-8100 in the Asrock Deskmini would outperform this VivoMini and save about $70, with higher performing options available too.

Could someone please educate me? How is it that an i3 is able to beat an i7, and by that much? I am also confused because my i7-2600 from many years ago appears to beat a lot of new processors these days, according to benchmarkimg sites. Have processors really stopped getting faster?

What's the best specs one can expect from a laptop under $300 (not refurbished) on a good sale?

Someone I know needs a cheap laptop and obviously you can't expect some great specs on one that cheap, but I have no idea what's good enough for a casual laptop user.

A $299 lenovo had an i3, which sounds good for that price.... but then I see it's only 2 cores, 2.3 GHz, and 2133 RAM. But maybe that's all you can expect for that price?

You need to add a hard drive/ssd, memory, and an operating system. Its a "barebones pc". You may find ways of getting Windows 10 for free but its not coming with this PC from NEwegg. No OS is included.

I7 7500U is a low power (laptop) processor with 2 cores. I3 8100 is a desktop cpu with 4 cores. 8th gen Intel (8000 series) raised the core counts on many of the CPUs. Processors didn't stop improving, it's more that Intel was milking their lead over AMD for the past 10 years and then Ryzen happened so with 8th gen they finally increased core counts.

You're comparing a full sized desktop i7 to a mobile variant.

I have three of these but they are the M021M version, and I think they are great. They are excellent for business use and home use - NOT GAMING. They are a great alternative to a laptop if you are not purchasing for mobility/portability.

Is this a good deal for home use ? Will be mostly used for programming , excel, watching videos /Netflix. I already have an ssd with windows from an old Lenovo laptop that stopped working.

Be careful everyone, the Amazon listing says this has windows 10 multiple times. However it doesn't have a hard drive so that isn't possible. Especially since it doesn't appear to be bundled with a copy of windows or anything.
