This mechanical comparison shows no reason to upgrade https://www.imaging-resource.com/.../canon/t6/

I got this camera w/lens, and additional 75-300 mm lens for 249. This deal is $50 dollars more without the 75-300 lens. If you can hold off, deals will be available in the second half of the year.

If you define "better" as more features, then the answer is Yes. The T6 has a bigger jpeg buffer, NFC, Built in wifi, supports more video formats, etc. However, it's the same sensor, megapixels, ISO support etc. In other words, image and video quality will be the same for both cameras

Vs a much better Panasonic 4K G7 recently posted here for $399? Vs Canon refurbished dslr website which has these 2K Models selling for <$200 Black Friday and at other big holidays. Nope!!
Not a Deal by far!
...
For videos: No 4K, no fast AF, overpriced for the obsolete sensor/body vs the G7.
..
Vs. Older Canons, do you have a model with the same megapixel? If so, same sensor, don't bother.
...

For photos: Well known that even a Nikon D3xxx series beats these Canons for photo resolution and detail level even. (See comparative reviews - dpreview.com etc)
https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-750d-rebel-t6i/8
Compare T6 vs D3400, especially at iso 3200+.
Look at the pencil sketch of the man's head to the right side of the test image. Note the better detail level in his hair.

...
Kit lens + friend's Canon?
Crap!
Seriously!
Testing vs a Pentax MX-1 point and shoot.
Indoor photo, tripod, map on wall.
Result?
Better photos from the MX-1 with better fine detail level due to a lens that has better mtf.
You'd have to buy a lens with better mtf, like a. cheap $<100 50mm f/1.8, for the Canon to get sharp shots.
...
Imo, only worth picking up at the <$200 level on sale if you absolutely don't get the better Nikon, Panasonic, Sony, etc.

Right now, only the T5 is close (not a sale season yet) at $278 (about $80 higher than a big holiday sale price).
https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/eos-rebel-t5-ef-s-18-55mm-is-ii-lens-kit-refurbished
...

T6 does Not have a LCD screen that flips out and tilts that you may wish you had if you take photos from high or low. T6i or any model that has an "i" will.

...

https://magiclantern.fm/features.html
Don't buy higher than the T5/T5i/SL1 at this price point if you want to hack the camera for more features using MagicLantern!! There's no hacked firmware out yet for the T6 and higher.
(Super easy install. Just dump firmware onto blank sd card, insert, a few button pushes in the menu and you're loaded.)
Same 18 MP sensor in the T6 and lower, years back to the T3i even, so you'll not be worse off for picture quality going with the older, hackable models.
....

Even last year's T7i with new 24MP sensor still can't beat the older 24MP Nikon D3400 ! See dpreview image comparison, esp. At iso 3200+. Sketches, detail level in hair, etc

Pay attention to the refurb deals - comes and goes daily.

...

For weight savings while keeping same image quality and colors, consider Olympus mirrorless cameras. Rich color rendition.
Dpreview.com image comparison tool in the camera review to compare quality.

DSLRs tend to be very heavy, esp with good zoom lenses, and lighter mirrorless 4/3rds cameras are a good alternative for long hikes.
