only better sale was for the grey one a few months ago and was only $2 cheaper, debating using my amex offer for this one.

There is a thermoworks offer, or something else?

$76 plus $4 results in what we in the biz call $80. OP, please take note.

I haven't used an actual thermapen, but I don't understand how they are so pricey.

How the hell is a refurbished unit considered "open box"?

1. these are good, much better than those $20 ones on Amazon.

2. they look like a premium product, nice conversation starter in a grilling party.

3. they are pricey so you will not leave it on the grill and forget it.

I love mine. I destroyed 3 $20 ones before I got this, and it has already lasted twice longer than those 3 combined.

They use a thermocouple, not a thermistor to start with. Thermocouples are much more expensive, much more accurate, faster and last a great deal longer. Likewise the probe can be made thinner, so the puncture is smaller. This might not seem like a big deal but even a modest hole in a protein can cause a lot of moisture loss. Most your cheaper models use thermistors.

The build quality overall is higher than your average instant read thermometer. Just read reviews. You are paying for something that is reliable and accurate. Mix that with the fact it can be NIST calibrated and it makes sense that professional kitchens and labs would use it. Also, anyone that prefers not filling landholes.

Plus you are paying a premium for something NOT made in China. These are made in England and therefore will cost more.

If I could afford one, I'd buy one. I can't, however, so a few years back I bought one of their Thermopops on sale and am very happy with it. I had looked at all the competitors and I just didn't see anything as reliable. Any models review sites recommended still appeared to have several times higher failure rates. I know a lot of people on Slickdeals have the logic of buying multiple cheap disposable versions of an item instead of buying quality once, but that just isn't me.

Best part about the advertisement is---Use in either hand.
That being said, I consider myself a pretty good cook on the grill (charcoal)
Wife got me to try this and it has REALLY helped. Steaks are better, no dry chicken. I would of never spent this kind of money on one of these, but she got it for her baking.

But $76 is ridiculous. I have one of these and a $5 one that read exactly the same. Sure it looks better but I don't really care how cool it looks and what conversation starter could this possibly be??? "So you like setting cash on fire???"

You can buy 15 regular ones that does the exact same thing.

I'll never care if I melt it or lose it or if the dog decides to play with it.
