The lightest 1070 checks almost all the boxes. Only ding reviewers seem to have on it is flex.

Found a review here:

https://www.pcmag.com/review/3601...ealth-thin

Reviewer noted that MSI chose to split the drive ("Further, the 512GB is split into two drives, with Windows taking up about half of one 299GB drive. The other drive is free, but this setup lessens the already lower-than-average capacity.") This kind of annoys me, since it seems there is one 512 gb drive split into a 299 GB and 213 GB partition? Not sure why they did that, but presumably you could clean install or undo it somehow.

If it's the same physical drive it's super easy to just erase the partition in disk management and then it'll show up as one larger drive. Whole process can be done in like 30 seconds (Including navigating to disk management). Should delete any MSI recovery partitions while you're in there too if they made them.

OP, "512gb sad" should be "512GB SSD" in title.

And from my view, this is VERY tempting.

The SSD in this particular model is a SATA SSD in the m.2 factor, though there are other models of this laptop with NVMe SSDs instead (per Best Buy question [bestbuy.com]). There's a second NVMe m.2 SSD socket available if you want to tear it all down [youtube.com].

This is an amazing laptop but runs a little hot. It can be fixed but undervolting the cpu and turning up the fans. There's a great guide on how to do that on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/laptops/...u_a_guide/

I was able to get my core temps down into the low to mid 70s while gaming using the guide above.

1070 maxq vs 1080, $350 more + tax.
the only issue with the asus is its screen is 60hz, but someone mentioned you can exchange the screen for a better one if that is a concern.
Also there is a cpu difference. But since 8th gen throttles alot with very high temperature, I think the gap is small. Under certain circumstances it might run games faster.

There is a $1499 asus rog gtx1080 laptop with very positive review. I believe that is a better deal. Any suggestions?

These are two completely different beasts:
Yours: 7.5lb 17in with only a 256GB SSD and a 7700HQ
This: 4.14lb 15in screen (with thin bezels) with a 512GB SSD with a hexa-core 8750H, the power adapter on the GS65 is also probably .75lbs lighter than the 330W one of the Asus.

The asus one comes with a 1tb harddrive too. I think 256ssd + 1tb hdd is a better combination. The heavily throttled 8th gen cpu difference was mentioned in my second reply. I will not repeat it here.
In your comparison, I believe you forget the biggest differences: much more powerful video card and about $500 less in price for most people.
The weight is different for sure. Some prefer a bigger one, some prefer a smaller one. But since it is a high configuration gaming laptop we are talking about, bigger screen is a plus IMHO.
