Is there any reason to buy this vs the HD8 tablets that go on sale for $20-$30 from time to time (for Amex cardhders)?

From my understanding, the Fire tablets limit what you can install on them because it's not truly an Android tablet -- it's Amazon's shell based on Android. This one allows all apps from the Google Play Store. That being said, there are ways to hack the Fire tablet to allow non-Amazon apps to be installed.

You can install google services and play store on the amazon ones, ....none of them are full HD, so i would say go with the cheaper one.

1GB of ram? Not a good deal, it's going to be a laggy mess to use.

I agree that 1GB of RAM is not enough for most people these days and a resolution of 1280x800 isn't too much to expect in this price range. I opted for the Lenovo Tab 4 8-inch model. It has 2GB of RAM, a 1280x800 display, and front-firing stereo speakers. It does lack dual-band WiFi for some reason. It was $79.18 refurb at Walmart (currently sold out) and occasionally drops near $100 new at Amazon. Even at current prices of around $120 new and $100 used I think it's a good basic tablet with Nougat for people who don't want to be bothered with side-loading Google apps onto a Kindle. Just my two cents, which are probably worth just that!
