I have 19 HGST drives from 1TB (2008) to a 6TB (2017) and have only had 1 failure (All others still running just fine). Meanwhile ive had a roughly a roughly 30% failure rate for segate and almost 12% on WD, i stopped buying anything other than HGST (for storage) years ago.

Just grabbed a 6tb for $150 off ebay, same $/tb but better install density. On the other hand, if the drive dies, you lose more data.

I think according to back blaze hdd reports 3 and 6 tb drives fail more often than 2 4 or 8 tb drives

how do you have your unraid configured? I am wary of raids because of a controller failure that blasted an entire array. Now I have JBOD with critical files mirrored via folder sync app. But I'm intrigued by a single unraid array for simplicity's sake.

Thanks for that info but I have a few of the sixes and I haven't had a problem yet. These are 24/7 capable drives that I buy for light video editing/storage. If they don't arrive DOA I expect them to last a while under my use scenario.

Unraid can be configured to store files as complete parts so even if you lose a motherboard you will not lose the data. It's different from any other form of backup. You can have just one parity drive protecting something like 12 other fully utilized drives against up to two drives failing at once. It's pretty awesome. You can add small SSD drives as cache drives to speed everything up. I have one 4tb HGST drive backing up 8 other 4tb HGST drives. No issues in around three years.

Get it HGST has one of the best warranties and most reliable drives, I stopped buying WD Blacks for these.

This price will probably show up on Google Express. Stack on the "new user" coupon.

Would this be a good drive for redundant (mostly) cold storage of home movies and pictures?

You don't want this drive for basic PC use. Get at least 250GB SSD, or better a 500GB now that they are cheap. For media/storage, wait for a deal on 5k drive from WD, etc. Much more quiet, and runs a lot cooler. I have the 5TB version of this drive, and it's disconnected because of the heat, and noise.

This is true, but it's also very loud, and hot. Noise reminds me of my old 10k Raptors lol. Not good for basic pc use IMO.
