Okay guys, for those who had interests in buying this and has a compatible phone, here are the major differences, both in design and in practice, between Daydream and its older Cardboard cousin:

Google Cardboard was never designed to be worn. Google Daydream was designed from the ground up to be worn on your head for much longer periods of time, and a lot of the improvements stems from this initial goal.
Daydream is a lot more comfortable to wear than many other headsets. The 2017 redesign made it the most comfortable mobile headset I've worn, and I've tried almost everything under the sun: various Cardboards, Gear VRs, Oculus GO and the Mirage Solo.
It's also a whole not more convenient to setup. Instead of fiddling with the phone trying to properly center align it while putting it into the headset, there's several capacitive rubber dots lined inside the housing for alignment purposes. Just dump the phone in, snap it shut, and your phone is perfectly aligned every time, ready for VR.
The 2017 redesign Daydream uses fresnel lens, the same type of lens used by the HTC Vive. The picture quality is better and the FOV had improved slightly from the official Cardboard design.
Daydream also has a dedicated motion controller designed for the ecosystem, so every app that runs on Daydream uses it. You no longer have to dig for controllers that may or may not be compatible or use gaze and a single button as your only form of control.
Unlike Cardboard, Daydream has its own launcher, so you can switch from app to app without taking off the headset. There's also a VR specific Play store that you can browse and purchase VR apps from.

Some notes on how Daydream differs from GearVR (and Oculus GO):

Daydream has its own apps ecosystem that's run by Google and GearVR and the GO's app store is curated by Oculus. There's not a lot of overlap, and Daydream unfortunately don't have as many apps in terms of raw numbers
And up to the very recent past, Daydream had the distinct advantage of being the only place that runs everything Google: Google Photos, Play Movies and TV, and most importantly YouTube. YouTube was just released for GearVR though, so that's no longer a monopoly that Google is holding out on. Funny enough, Chrome had just officially launched for Daydream, so now there's a new useful exclusive they can lay claim to.

Vr porn mainly, your phone can't really handle any type of vr games worth anything. Just most people don't want admit it.

what are these useful for?
Really depends on what you want, but this is much easier to use than my Samsung VR 2018 ones at least for me and its universal meaning you can use any 2015+ android phone.

Well not any Android phone.... Google cardboard works with any Android phone but this is daydream.. you have certain Android phones that are compatible.. it's like a turbo charged cardboard.. the screen in the device has to be a certain type... Meaning your device has to be daydream "compatible"

That is my question also...
I found this article form 2016 about the differences. It seems like it's better but not much detail on how. https://venturebeat.com/2016/11/1...ew-review/

Apparently this 2017 model is better than the 2016 model in that it has an aluminum heat sink for phones.
