Hello, I hope you are doing well.

SpiderOak One [spideroak.com] has Unlimited Cloud Storage for $179 per year. Enter code AUG18UNLIMITED to use this promotion. Sign up by 08/08/2018 at 11:59pm CT (update: this promotion has been extended to 08/11/2018).

Author's Notes
  • This promotion rarely comes around; the last time an unlimited promotion was available was in October 2015.
  • This promotion is ideally for people who want a lot of cloud storage; this beats virtually any 4TB storage plan by any other reputable company, and this gives you unlimited storage. If you only need a couple TBs of storage space, this promotion likely isn't for you.
  • For Price Research and Comparison to other services, see this post below.
Promotion Details
  • Annual subscription rate of $179/year is protected by our lifetime pricing guarantee: once subscribed, your plan is locked in at that rate for as long as your account is open with SpiderOak. Offer expires Wednesday, August 8th at 11:59pm CT.
Product Information
  • Unlimited Devices: The only limitation on your SpiderOak ONE account is the amount of storage in your subscription plan. Back up a many computers as you want.
  • Secure, No Knowledge Backup: Security is our first concern. Only you control the keys used to encrypt your data. We have No Knowledge of the contents of your files.
  • Support for All Major OSes: No matter if you use Windows, Mac, or Linux, you can back up and sync your data with SpiderOak One. We also provide mobile apps for iOS and Android.
Enjoy!

So question, i still have crashplan. This isnt essentially a backup application, it is just for storage. Would anyone be able to recommend comparable secure and reputable backup company like crashplan? This is for one computer with at least 1 TB of data.

It depends what you mean by "backup". While it might not have the controls of crashplan, it can function similarly. You can run a Windows backup, Apple Time Machine or similar third party backup software, and place the backups on your storage space.

You can also select folders in the Spideroak One app to backup.

For the price, I moved from crashplan to Backblaze.

The control you have is completely different and I am not happy with the way they exclude or include file types. Kinda stuck with it.

Their Support page regarding Accepted Payment Methods [spideroak.com] states:
Quote :
We accept credit and debit cards for payment for SpiderOak One accounts. At the time of purchase or upgrade, you will be asked to provide a credit or debit card. That card will be automatically billed during subsequent renewals of your plan unless you cancel the service.

If you wish to not share your personal billing information with us, our system is set up to accept pre-paid debit cards, which do not provide us with your personal information.

We are unable to accept PayPal, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, ACH or wire transfers, or purchase orders as payment for the consumer-oriented SpiderOak One. Our business-oriented backup products SpiderOak Groups and Enterprise can accept additional payment methods from organizations on a case-by case basis; contact us at sales@spideroak-inc.com to explore this alternative.

I hope this helps,
Tofu Vic

You will not be able to use spideroak for uploading files to the cloud like Dropbox or sync.com. Spideroak is strictly a backup service.

SpiderOak's big selling point has been their security and encryption.

As of this past Friday, they killed their warrant canary. They also had an outage, discussed some changes on Twitter, and then launched new price plans.

They can be assumed to be compromised, that is the function of a canary.

You can assess them as any backup service but don't lean too heavily on their security assurance.

Not true. The SpiderOak ONE software has, in addition to Backup, a sync function, and also a cloud storage function, which is similar to Dropbox, Onedrive, etc.

Are you sure about the cloud storage? Source please. Cos I didn't find it anywhere. Sync is not the same as cloud-only storage.

Here's the info straight from their support site. Like i said, it's only a backup solution. You can't use it as cloud storage

I'm sorry, I'm not understanding the difference. I looked at some of the help pages on your link... I get that you can designate certain drives (like all of C:\ (not that it's recommended)) for it to auto backup, but what does it mean when you say you can't use it as cloud storage?

Also, when it makes backups... does it keep older versions of your backups? Like by date etc, incase there's corruption of files? Partially asking because I wonder if this would be good for someone who is doing work with design - like Maya/3DS Max... you know, things where you might prefer to have old versions saved elsewhere
