Application-wise, Wahoo was pretty customizable last time I checked. Strava is my preference for an app/service. However, Endomondo is also a good running focused app/service.

Which phones can connect to this strap directly?

I've been using Runkeeper for the last six years and have been very pleased (500+ activities tracked). I subscribe to their Pro plan simply because I want to support their work however it is not necessary. The free version is great and is what I used for at least three years.
I compared ratings on all the apps that tim32fly suggested (peeked my interest) and they all rank lower on the Apple App Store. YMMV, they're all seem to have a free option so no risk to try them out.

Endomondo doesn't support ant+ devices anymore. Only Bluetooth from what I can see in the latest Android version.

Under Armour Record is great. I use it to track my heart rate during workout and runs. I have both straps like this and the UA JBL heart rate ear buds.

Edited to add, just realized this is not Bluetooth. NVM. I would recommend getting a Bluetooth strap.

It depends on the goals. I have been using the Endomondo for 8 years.
In premium version, you can see a breakdown to heart rate zones. I wish they could add voice hints so you could hear if you pulse is coming out of a particular zone (for instance if you like to keep it in the fat burning zone and don't want to go into the aerobic zone)

I like the statistics it gathers and I usually do an analysis of my workouts once a week comparing different types of the workouts I do and how my heart react on it.
