The expiration has to do with foam degradation. I think that won't be a factor if stored indoors. You should also register it so you'll be informed of any recalls.

I definitely am not sure about this, but if you can show me something to prove this I'll accept that theory. Only thing, is that I am pretty sure the expiration is already stamped.... so it doesn't make much sense to me, if what you say is true .

is there a way to buy just the car seat base for a reasonable amount (thinking $20 ish)

want to keep 2 cars ready with the base so I need not shift the base each time I switch the car with my spouse

That's like milk...it may stay til (or beyond) the expiration date under the proper conditions. If you leave it out in the sun, would you agree it won't stay good til the expiration date?
