Google is banned in China, so Mi Store cannot host the Google Service apk. You can find a 3rd party Google Service apk from Mi Store and after you enable Unknown Source, you should be able to install it. Whether the apk is safe or Google service runs without errors on MIUI, I have no idea.
Xiaomi's international phones have Google Play Store built-in. I am not sure if this deal involves an international version or a chinese one.

Wouldn't recommend buying a Xiaomi phone (With MIUI), unless it has android one (pure Android). Your Google stuff never works right on Xiaomi phone. They simply destroyed Android with MIUI.
Btw
Can their Android one phone be had in the USA, the A2? Is it made for all our att/TMobile bands here?

If you were referring to this phone, fear not, it will work on Tmo LTE bands 2,4,5,12 except the very new band 71 which most phones will not have anyways.

How does this stack up to the likes of Samsung galaxy or other flagships?

Great comment, most people don't understand it. Even Apple and Samsung come with questionable software, just because no one talks about it doesn't make them fine. Only way to get peace of mind is to run a customer ROM which many android OEM allows... before buying a phone head to XDA, find right ROM like LineageOS or something.

It looks like an IPhone X no originality whatsoever. I don't like chinese knockoffs.

How does this company not get sued for copying the iPhone X design?
