Quick review in a nutshell:

All models of DT-990's are super treble heavy. It is what it is.

I own the DT-880 600ohms, driven by a Schiit Magni 3 preamp + Schiit Modi Multibit DAC and they sound amazing. The only negative of these headphones is the plastic piece that is the joint for the speakers to extract/retract. They fractured on mine and I was forced to buy a 3D printed replacement of that plastic joint. The good news is, with the plastic replaced with super hard 3d printer plastic, these things won't ever break again.

Best sound quality of headphones I've ever had. If you have an amp to power the DT-880 600 ohms, give it a go. I promise you will not regret it.

Love my 600ohm DT-880's! I have had them amped with a Little Dot MKIII for about 5 years now and am still in love with their sound

Can any of these headphones be used without an amp? Sorry for the newbie question but I'm finally looking to delve into finer audio and ditch the Beats, lol. Thanks!

Thanks. Just ordered the 990s and the FiiO E10K for $59.00. I was going to get the M40X, but I know my friend has these headphones, plus the dac. He told me to go ahead and order them since they are a really good price.

I use both the Sennheiser HD 598 and BeyerDynamic Premium DT-880 a lot (home and work). Prefer the 880 as they fit my ears better and seem to sound a bit better. For $120 that is a great deal.

Just a heads up, I'm pretty sure the FiiO E10K will not be able to power the 990's. That FiiO's max is 300ohms before you run into insufficient power problems. It's limited to the USB power which is rated at 0.5A for USB1.0/2.0 and 0.9A for USB 3.0+. You're better off powering them off of your smartphone depending on which one you have.

Just got the Bose QC 35 II and am a bit disappointed in the cracking noise generated from Max Volume.

As someone just looking for a solid pair of high-ish end headphones mainly for smartphone/streaming use during my train ride,

Would I be wise to return the Bose and grab these?!

Disclaimer: audio newb, I've got no amps, DAC, etc.

I have a BeyerDyamic Custom Pro One and it's falling apart (over 6 years old).

Which one do you guys recommend? DT-880 600 Ohm, DT-80 250 Ohm, or DT-990 600 Ohm

Nice! I love my 880s! I have a modmic5 on them and use them for gaming or just enjoying some good tunes. I would recommend to anyone.

These are open back, so you will hear everything from outside and they will hear what you are playing, depending on how loud you have them turned up.

I assume you meant DT-880 250 Ohm?

If you have a halfway decent amp, definitely get the DT-880 600 Ohm. I own an old edition of the DT-880 600ohm from 1980s, and it's awesome. The headband is falling apart though.
