I had an Android box like this to replace a fire TV. The interface was terrible. Have these improved?

I used to like these kinds of boxes, but with Netflix and Amazon prime video restricted or limited to SD - I can't recommend these at all. Fortunately official boxes like the Fire TV, Nexus Player, Mibox and Nvidia Shield are not hard to find. I can't think of a single reason I'd buy this instead.

Unless netflix changed their rules, the boxes that are using the official Android TV operating system should be accepted, but any android boxes that don't are limited to SD.

I know it is expensive but get yourself a shield. Don't waste your money testing out other android boxes.

If that's true then these services won't display anything but SD video on an Android tablet, but they play HD video. I use an Odroid XU4 on my TV and Netflix works fine and it's not crummy SD.
