This is purely anecdotal but I felt the same way seven years ago when I stepped into The North Face store shopping for backpack for college.

Being dumb and young, I ended up buying a $100 North Face backpack (Heckler). Turns out however, it is one hell of a return on my money because after seven years of abuse, the backpack is still holding up with just one tiny rip on the top.

My point is, sometimes it's worth it to spend a bit more for a backpack if they are of good quality.

There are a few reasons.
-The materials they use can be quite expensive, at least compared to cheap bags. You'd be surprised how much material is actually in them too.
-They tend to have very high quality control. That means they're either spending a lot of time up front making sure things are solid, or they spend a lot of time going back and fixing things/tossing bad gear.
-Because QC is so high the bags last forever, so they don't sell many. Staying in business means selling for a high enough price to cover all their operating costs for the extended time between when a person buys a bag and when they decide to upgrade.
-They're actually pretty highly engineered.

That's one hell of an expensive pack for being only water resistant and with no ventilation. REI is for yuppie hikers.
