The 7th gen mobile i7s are also 4 core/8 thread, but with a 45 Watt TDP (except the U versions which were 2/4 and a 15 Watt TDP).

The 8th gen i7 U processors got bumped up to 4/8 but retained the 15 Watt TDP. The H versions with are 6/8 are 45 Watt TDP processors (like the old 7th gen 4/8 i7s). The mobile i7 G processors are a 65 Watt TDP shared between the CPU and GPU.

This is both a positive and a negative. The i7-8705G has the Intel CPU and AMD Vega GPU combined on the same package. So they share the same heatsink and cooler.

On the plus side, this means if you're not using the GPU, you've essentially got a 4 core/8 thread laptop i7 with a 65 Watt TDP (same as a desktop i7). It will plow through tasks at max boost speed that would force earlier gen mobile 4/8 i7s (45 Watt TDP) and 8th gen i7-U processors (15 Watt TDP) to thermal throttle.

On the down side, this means the CPU will use max boost speed any time you throw a slightly intensive task at it, causing the fan to turn on a lot. Power consumption (and thus heat generation) increases non-linearly with clock speed - the higher clock speeds generate disproportionately more heat per clock. Fortunately, there's an easy way to prevent the CPU from hitting the higher clock speeds.

Create a new power profile named something like low-fan. In the advanced power options under Processor power management, set the Maximum processor state to 99% to disable Turbo Boost. Set it even lower if the fan and heat are still too high for your liking. If you ever want to do a task where you need the extra CPU performance (heat and fan noise be damned), just change back to the Balanced power profile.

Another option to reduce heat generation is to disable Hyperthreading in the BIOS. Most computing tasks only see about a 5%-10% boost from hyperthreading, while it generates a lot more heat. So from a heat/performance aspect it's generally not worth it. Unfortunately, changing the BIOS setting requires a reboot. It's not as simple to turn hyperthreading on or off as it is with Turbo Boost and max clock speed.

Remember, you can always take a fast laptop processor and slow it down to make it run cooler. You cannot take a slow processor and speed it up.

8GB RAM kills this deal. IMHO these days it should be 12GB or higher considering the other specs on this machine

Has anyone had issues with rebate? I'm ready to jump on this deal, but I don't really like rebates unless they're instant due to the "technicalities". I've never not gotten a rebate, just never done it like this.

Expect to wait a few months for it after you submit it but overall worth it. The rebate gets sent on a rebate card

I ordered one. I have experience with pervious generations as I bought one for my mother. I was pretty impressed. Been wanting to stop using 2012 Mac Pro. Upgraded to 16GB, didn't need the 512GB as I have a NAS and 1TB OneDrive. Tax was a bit of a disappointment, but it's harder and harder to avoid paying anymore.

Any idea if the rebate for the 13.3" version might come back? I missed the last one in June, currently looking at options for 13". Thanks....
