Freedompop suspending accounts with $1 virtual cards

Not a deal...

My account was suspended due to "billing issue" despite having my top-up disabled. I generated a $1 card a long time ago. I tried creating a new one with 6 months and $5 and it kept getting an error. Finally I just decided to use a regular card (and dispute later if needed) and it worked. The message I got said there would be a $20 authorization that should drop off. I'll keep an eye on it, however I bet a vast majority accounts with top ups disabled will be suspended at the next renewal cycle.

Well that makes sense. If you deliberately use a card with a limited balance, then if they ping your card for $20.00 the charges will fail. If you update the card, it'll work just fine. Or if you at least use a card with a balance higher than $20.00.

They are doing this because many users will bounce payments by using virtual cards. I got a couple dozen alerts for my accounts as well.

This happened to me too; was using Visa/Amex gift cards that had $1-2 left on them; most of them got dinged away around the time they started reducing the F&F free megs. Switched to Red Pocket on one of the email promos; life's been a little less chaotic keeping track of several FP cards. It's not /free/ anymore, but - I guess that gravy train was going to end eventually anyway.

I wish I had the patience to go back to this company but my time is more valuable.

I can't help but notice some shill has already marked the thread "expired" but thumbs up OP for uncovering more of FP's shenanigans.

I'm glad the OP posted his experience, however how is requiring a valid method of payment, "shenanigans" ?

Also, I don't know how posts get marked expired but don't see any reason to jump to conclusions or to call people names.

First off you should just disable Top-Up. It costs next to nothing if done correctly. You should enroll in Safety Mode ($6.99/Month) near the end of your billing cycle as the service is pro-rated. You can enroll any time you want, but it'll be cheaper as the billing cycle gets closer and closer to the end.

Then after enrolling in Safety Mode, you can disable Top-Up. You can unsubscribe from Safety Mode afterwards and you're good to go.

To answer your question, Top-Up formerly activated at within 20MB of the plan limit for SIM's. However, it seems that it no longer activates until the limit is exceeded. FreedomPop has been improving their policies regarding Top-Up activation. It certainly will not activate at 100MB as this wasn't the case even previously.

Users please check your top-up setting. Those older accounts that had the auto top-up disabled before they start charging $5 to disable, freedompop turned the auto top-up back on for you. If you choose to disable it again, it will charge you $6.99 per month to disable.

Safety Mode is pro-rated, so it can cost as little as a few cents now. It's cheaper than before when it cost $5.00 in account credit to disable.

That's certainly concerning if even older users are having Top-Up re-enabled. However, I haven't seen this behavior on any of my older accounts. If true, then either it's targeted or will apply during the next new billing cycle.

I subscribed to this plan last July 12 using paypl but only got to use the service for one month and my account has been disabled. Agreement states credit card NOT required and the top-up was disabled by default. Was only able to use it for one month and literally there is no customer service you can reach out to that I know of except for user "freedompop" here on SD who has not replied to my message. Anybody know how I can get back my service before I file for dispute?

FreedomPop 12-Mo Prepaid - Unlimited Talk, Text, & 1GB Data - $39.99 (+3.99 Shipping) $43.98

12 - Month Prepaid Plan for $3.67/mo ( $39.99 +3.99 Shipping = $43.98 Total)

What you get:

Unlimited Talk, Text, 1 GB of LTE data every month for 12 months
No credit card required
Includes Voicemail & MMS
No introductory pricing - After your 12 period is over, you can renew at the same rate (requires a payment method to be added to account)
Additional data available (requires payment method to be added to account)
For use with FreedomPop app available for download in the App Store and Google Play Store
Compatible with most unlocked Android & iOS GSM devices including unlocked phones from AT&T, T-Mobile, Metro PCS, Cricket and other GSM carriers.

It most certainly was 100MB. It was that for years. They didn't remove the 100MB limit until this year.
