Verizon Up has free 20 dollars off the Echo Dot on Amazon. Just look under the credit area and there is the place to claim it without using a credit. Gives a code for amazon.

I am a bit confused about all the Amazon devices. I read somewhere somebody said they uses the dot to control lighting and receptacles but looking at the differences it seems you need the expensive decide which has a hub.

Will the dot work to control receptacles compatible with Alexa or would you need a device with a hub (more expensive)?

You need some kind of hub for lighting, either in the Echo or an external one. A Lutron kit with a hub and a starter light switch is like $100.

It depends on the device. I have a WEMO outlet that works directly with the Dot, no hub required. I also have Philips Hue Go light, which requires the Philips Hue hub to control it using my Dot.

TP-Link KASA devices also do not require a hub, they work over wireless.

Neither do LIFX bulbs. Wifi devices typically do not need a hub, just needs to say compatible with Alexa

Just a heads up, Target has some of the Fabriq mini speakers w/ Alexa on clearance for $14.98. That's a cheap wannabe Echo dot. THey can also be daisy chained for multi room sound.

Note: you can also score two Dots at this price using one code, by adding two to the cart. You automatically save $20 by bundling- and the $20 Verizon promotion drops the price of two from $99.98 to $59.98, making each Dot $29.99.
