3/4"x10' schedule 40 pvc pipe saw it in half, add a 3/4" cap and drill a 1/4" on top, finish off with a 1/4" bolt, couple of washers and nuts. If you want it to disassemble into smaller pieces, saw it to your desired length and add couplings.

I made a handheld camera pod out of a few pieces of electrical plastic conduit connectirs and a box, painted it up and added a cold shoe and a manfrotto quick release head. Looks great + allows easy two handed shooting for stability.

On this though, since portability is a factor, the pvc pipe idea would be a little clumsy to assemble/dissemble/store.

Not really a fan of monopods anyway. Unless the camera weighs a ton, i'd rather use my two hand pod or a shoulder mount rig (costs less than this thing, is easier to transport, many have a cold shoe and no cheap vanguard joints to break). For pods it's Manfrotto only, these lesser brands always end up breaking, wasting money.
