People say that this one runs very hot and needs lots of airflow in your case. Some people have alleged significant heat throttling during games.

I am choosing to hold off.

I've got this model of R9 280 and it runs at 90 with the fan at the "jet engine" setting. I used it for a couple winters (in Utah) to heat my bedroom. That's not an exaggeration.7

Yeah, a bad idea to have a single fan on RX 580, and not some crazy advanced blower style at least, since this design worked on Vega and 1080 Ti FE

I read online where some people said the metal shroud/cover only made it worse. Wonder if you could take off the shroud/cover to get thermals back to acceptable temperatures?

Wonder if this was designed with mining in mind? It may be fine if the miner undervolted it.

This card has overheating issues from reviews I've read.

It's just AMD's reference design. They put out reference designs as a minimum acceptable spec. Single fan configurations are desirable to ODMs and OEMs to cut cost on BOM.

Thanks for the info. I wonder what the cost is to add a fan? I would assume it would be less than $5. The increase in sales and economics of scale may help pay for it.

These cooler type of GPU's SUCK.

This is N O T a slickdeal.

These coolers are the worst EVER. Read the comments they run to hot.

Thumbs down. THIS card at 150 would still be a bad deal.
This product is a 580 8gb and tries to keep the other 580 cards in that price category.

Exactly, why would this be a deal if you have to buy a 3rd party cooler for it? That is not a deal adding the price of that as well.

IF you had a H2O block already, MAYBE I would consider it.. but I wouldn't because to SELL this card when I'm done I would get 20 bucks for it used. All because of this cooler.

All of this complaining is nonsense. Yes, it is a reference cooler. Yes it is the least desirable cooling design, but that isn't the be all, end all of the discussion. I have been using a pair of RX 480s for two years in stock reference config without major issue.

A reason to buy this is that it's a bit cheaper than the other models and adding an aftermarket cooler is my eventual plan, like a waterblock. If you buy a card with a better air cooler, you will not find a compatible water block. Sure some nvidia cards use reference boards and non reference coolers, but that is not usually the case with AMD cards.

The other very relevant point of this card is a small form factor case that doesn't work well with bigger coolers as the air tends to recycle rather than be pushed out..

If you have a big full tower with great airflow and you only intend to use a single card with no plans to eventually have a custom watercooling loop, then maybe this isn't the card for you.

Just got this card. Adjusted the fan curve in msi afterburner and running 60c after 1hr of furmark. Fan is pretty loud (i use headphones anyway) but people reporting 80c temps must have poor case air flow or not adjusted the fan correctly. Only a small inconvenience considerong the low price.
