Best Buy has the 55" TCL 5 Series on sale for 399.99. It is an excellent TV for the specs. Has HDR10 + Dolby Vision, 4k Roku, wide color and extremely low input lag which is great for gaming. Its one step below the TCL 6 Series.

Alternatively, Amazon and Walmart have the 5 Series for 429.99 which include a wifi remote while the Best Buy version requires line of sight / IR.

This monitor may be unsuitable as a PC Monitor..

ONLY the 43 inch model does 1:1 mapping without the cross hatch pattern..

"Rting only tested the 43 inch model."

49 inch and above ALL HAVE the crosshatch pattern. not 1:1 mapping.

The bottom image supplied by Rting Confirms crosshatch pattern on the 49 inch and 55 inch Panels.

We don't have photos of the 65 inch , but it is almost 100% certain that it will be present.

This can not be turned off.

The Crosshatch pattern also extends to the TCL s4-series s5-series P6-series and R6-series from both THIS year and LAST year's

Would you guys jump on the TCL 55R617 for 615$ (which includes tax+shipping)? or wait for black friday deals. I'm pretty set on this TV as the one i want to buy but wondering if its better to hold out for a few more weeks..

Same question I'm having at the moment. I really want "real HDR" and so am pretty set on the 6 series. None of the stuff in the bf ads released so far touch the 617 for quality unless you're spending more than $1k.

I'm leaning toward jumping on it since even if it goes on sale to $550 at 90% of stores or amazon, 10% sales tax in IL pushes it up to 605 anyway.

hah, I had to check to see what you meant. Funny I don't even notice them, I couldn't tell you one ad that I even looked at. I just looked again and you won't even see them on the home screen. Once you scroll over to an input or app then you will seen ad in right column.

I rarely use the stock Roku apps since I have 4K HTPC, Ultra chromecast and Xbox one S on top menu. And ads can be avoided completely by using the ROKU APP on your phone. I have 55S and 65R side by side so I have a spare phone for each menu anyway.
Yeah I didn't know there was ads til I read his post and looked.. doesn't bother me though it just shows movies on sale for me.

If none of the ads are looking promising by next weekend i'll probably just jump on it and eat the retail penalty. I'm willing to pay a slight premium to not be stuck with a sub par set.

Does anyone have this in their bedroom? How are the black levels for an LCD TV?

Now that I have read this and some specs, I think I should get the 6 series if I want a TV that can properly display HDR. Hope the 55" goes on sale!

It's not impossible but it's unlikely the 6 series will be a BF deal. As I recall, there were no P series sets on sale for BF last year. These are so popular TCL doesn't have to discount and I'm guessing given the MSRP the profit margin for the retailers isn't all that high.

I'm using SmartDNS service and it's VPN while here in Africa. Given our less than 25mb internet service, will this and any other hd tv be a waste of money?

You should be able to stream fine as long as the DNS holds and the service is consistent.

If you stream your media, 25mb internet will likely support 1080p max.

However, you would still have HDR available at that resolution (if you have a capable TV), which is arguably more important than the resolution factor (especially at 55" and below).

Local media obviously won't be affected by your internet speeds.

Hope this helps.
