i bought this smoker a few years ago and love it. using propane is super easy and makes controlling the temperature (Critical for smoking) very easy.

my only comment is that before i use it, i take out the wood trip tray and cover it with heavy duty aluminum foil, then put your soaked wood chips in (They smoke better this way without burning up too fast).

and you have to try smoked turkey, delicious.

I have this smoker, and it is well suited to the task. I've smoked beef, lamb and bison, chicken and fish, vegetables -- the smoked sweet potato is amazing.

Lava rocks + cast iron skillet beats dumping them in the chip pan it comes with anyday.

If you buy, you'll probably want to get an accurate thermometer or run it and check with another thermometer until you know how inaccurate the one bundled with it is, mine was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit on the low side.

And you don't really need the water tray in general, unless you're smoking unbrined fish. You can sub it out for a turkey pan that will act as a much better drip tray.

I have this one, and it is awesome.
The advantage of Gas vs Charcoal is once you get the right level of gas, for me at a consistantly 225 degrees, you can set it and forget it. Charcoal requires a lot of babysitting to keep an even temp.
Every 4 or so hours add water to the water pan so the meat doesn't dry out and you are good to go.

I have smoked amazing brisket, pulled pork, ribs, wings, chicken and even made Jerkey a few times.

Love the 4 racks you can adjust as I can get a lot of meat in there.

Never had a smoker, but am interested in one. Is this a great one to start with for beginners and what's the likeliness of other quality smokers going on sale this Black Friday?

Why smoke instead of grilling or baking? And can this be converted to Natural gas hookup? 😊
Grilling is usually higher heat, smoking is low and slow, you won't get that authentic smoke flavor with baking and you can choose which woods to smoke for different flavor profiles

I was shopping right next door to Home Depot when I got this deal alert. Just picked one up for my husband for Christmas.

Thanks! Seems like a good starter smoker.

This is a good but basic smoker. There are constantly ~$100 deals for this type of smoker or even ones with better features.

Buy it now and watch the deals over BF. Return this if better deal found.

What should one look for when buying a smoker?

Unfortunately I don't have that luxury. The nearest Home Depot is 2 hours away and I'd rather not make that drive just to return an item.
