The Shield TV is really integrated into the Google infrastructure- so any Google Assistant enabled device/speaker etc works great. Not sure why Best Buy is giving away an Echo with this.
if i ask nicely, would best buy give me a google mini instead of amazon dot? anyone tried?
I use an app called MrMC now (another fork of Kodi that the guy who developed SPMC moved over to develop for) and it works fantastically well.
I'm about to switch over to Plex and, from what I can tell, the Shield can direct play/direct stream most media and supports hardware transcoding with a wide range of media.

The S912 is a little faster, pricier but a little unstable. Better for games though. Don't know about any of the RK boxes like the RK3288, etc. -Never had one.
Now the shield is obviously the fastest, and stable of the bunch. Primarily more apparent in games, and emulation, or whenever you have many apps open, and need that extra gig of ram. (3GB vs 2GB) ((1GB on your firestick)) (((Well the newer firestick that was just released has more))).
Anyways, the Shield can't emulate Wii games, and many PS2 games well, let alone PS3 games. That is, if you are emulating your own roms.
There are exclusive games and ports though, that are made for the shield, and are great.
Also, you can pay a monthly fee, and play many games on their library:

Don't have a shield controller, so I can't say. With many, it's a preference, whether they use a PS4, One, Shield, or some other controller.
