I have a huge digital library, but my parents have a slow internet connection.

Most Android movie apps let you download movies for offline viewing. Are there any Android TV apps compatible with MoviesAnywhere or Ultraviolet that support downloading for offline viewing?

Just wondering if I'm missing anything the Shield can do differently, better or additional to what I have already, which is:

- 4K streaming with Roku on 65" TCL
- Plex server on dedicated Dell Optiplex behind TV
- XB1 with 4k gaming, streaming and 4K blu-ray

I don't play Android games.

Edit: I also have a Logitech Harmony to control TV with Alexa
The Shield will launch Plex faster and playing your higher quality titles a bit faster, but other than that your setup is pretty legit. The Rokus come in a close second IMO.

New to Shield...can it play movies directly from a USB drive?
Yes it can.

Can someone remind me what the benefits of the 2017 shield tv were over the prior gen? I do think I am still running an older shield somewhere. Maybe that can push me over the edge.
I have the 2015 model, and from what I recall the newer one is smaller, and lighter but contains essentially the same hardware. You will be missing out on the slim remote that has a mic and is rechargeable. The 2017 model is also missing the microSD card slot on the back.

Anyone stream pc games with this?
Yes, I do using Nvidia Gamestream. I have my Shield connected to my network via ethernet, and it's pretty great for playing pc games from the couch.

I am totally new to shield TV...may I ask a dumb question: does this bundle come with an actual TV? or it's just the media player and you have to have your own TV? Thanks!

The shield is the best tv companion. You can play your steam game on it now. Played overcook from my steam account with the kids last week and it was super fun.

If you have a smart TV with android and Ps4 is this still needed?

I'm trying to justify buying this but can't. Cause the tcl android TV does everything fine.

In my part of the world tcl comes with android TV not roku.
You don't need it unless you plan to play some Steam games and/or watch really really high def movies with extremely high audio quality i.e. UltraHD HDR movies with Dolby Vision or that Hi def 7.1 DTS tracks. Each movie I come across is at least 40Gb. With Avatar being the largest, almost 100 Gb. This is a powerful player, that can replace a HTPC. If all you play are 2K rips, you don't need it, FTV can handle those via Kodi or other player

No TV. Just the media player. But you can game with it

The shield is great. It is my only TV source, no cable. My only complaint is the remote goes to sleep after 5 min and is not instantly responsive.

Best Buy will offer it with controller for $159.99... i just saw the BF Ad.
Just saw that two. Great deal. Unsure if it comes with the Echo Dot. I am eyeing one of those Samsung 4k TVs (70"). Will wait for Costco to announce though as I am sure there is going to be tons of sweet deals in TVs.

I've been running a Plex server in my home since 2009, always on a headless Mac Mini in the basement. My server is still hosted on a late 2012 Mac Mini. It still runs great when I'm only serving to one device, but it can't handle HEVC, and now that my kids are grown, I am frequently streaming to 2 devices at the same time. It's not that infrequent to stream to three devices.

I think this Nvidia Shield is my best upgrade option, but I can't think of anything to do with that Echo Dot, so I haven't bitten. Decisions...

Quick question -
Currently we do not have cable. Have an older Panasonic plasma TV that we have been using along with a Firetv with Kodi. We do not get local channels, but use USTVNOW. My wife is from the Harrisburg area so for her it is nice to hear about the corruption taking place in Central PA. I'd like to find the best streaming device that can actually get local channels. We have a brand new LG oled TV that we are going to be switching to once our new house is finished. The original plan was to use an HD antenna with an HD home run duo. Would this be a better way to access Kodi and local channels? If not, what would you recommend?

I would really appreciate any insight that anyone could share.
Thanks all

Another advantage over smart TV's is that the interface is much faster. I have one of these and also a Sony TV with Android TV and the shield is clearly more snappy in the android interface. I really can't stand laggy interfaces.
