Thanks OP. It seems like a great deal when looking at only the superficial specs, which are admittedly amazing at this price.

But the underlying quality, especially of the motherboard, is suspect based on some disturbing reviews about reliability at both Staples and Office Depot.

Reasons for suspecting it has a low-end motherboard:
• Sub-par reliability, based on reviews.
• Only two memory slots, though admittedly this could be reasonable if it's a micro ATX motherboard. That's likely true since it's housed in a mini tower.
• No mention of whether the motherboard supports dual-channel mode for memory. Perhaps it can be assumed it does if it's the industry standard these days.

According to CNET, one of its two memory slots is filed by an 8 GB module of DDR4-2666. So as shipped, there would be no dual-channel boost to memory speed. Fortunately it would be easy to add a second module to bring total RAM to 16 GB.

Other specs I discovered that weren't mentioned in the first post:
• Form Factor: mini tower
• 2x M.2 slots
• 1x PCIe x16
• 1x PCIe x1

Minor quibble: I find it deceptive that some retail stores and maybe even Intel themselves advertise Optane as if it's part of system RAM. For example, some vendors claim that this PC has 24 GB RAM.

Incidentally, another SD thread covered this same desktop PC a few months ago.

For convenience, Intel's site offers a quick price check and comparison for this PC [intel.com], though it currently doesn't list Staples.

i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-core CPU is fast, but 310W SFF PS (small form factor power supply) cannot upgrade to support fast video card, so this PC is not suitable for gaming.

Conceptually, Optane uses a small but fast NVME SSD as HDD cache. In theory, 16GB Optane + 1TB HDD may perform almost as fast as 1TB SSD, but I have not tested it.

Recently built an i5 8400 and couldn't be under $550 before windows and without wifi, wireless keyboard and mouse. The only difference was my build had 16gb of ram. So I'd say this is a good deal, especially if you do not plan to game.

Although Optane memory uses NVMe interface, since that is the fastest interface available for a storage, Optane is not SSD. It's technology is more closer to Ram or memory, in fact you can consider it as a Non-Volatile memory. It is way faster than even the fastest PCIe SSD available and its performance is comparable with Ram's performance.
Because of that. along with Imtel's Driver optimization, it gives a very solid boost. Performance in some areas, specially sequential read, loading time for commonly used software, it can give performance similar to a 256GB SATA III SSD.
