According to LGJoel in the LG Q&A section the 49" is an IPS display and the 50" is VA.

Seems like a decent deal. I might bite as I need to purchase a TV by Saturday to ship to a family member.

I'm debating this one vs the toshiba 50" with built in fire TV for the same price $329. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tosh...Id=6194909

As by thoughts? Based on my experience with other smart TV implementations, I'm inclined to believe that a fire TV or Roku embedded will stay updated/useful for longer than the ones baked by the tv MFG. Ex: none of my Samsung tvs seem very useful 3 years later

end user is my mother in law who will probably be okay with either but already uses a Kindle tablet so I suspect the toshiba is more seamless for her to use/adopt

Yes, Roku and presumably Fire TV integrations are kept up to date. Compare to even brands like Samsung, which only update their UI on the most recent models. Don't know anything about the TV hardware though.
