Unfortunately the bad reviews seem to be mostly from poor assembly at the store.

I bought and assembled this bike myself. It's actually a great bike for $300. It's on par with most $500 hardtail entry Trek, Giant or Cannondales. I road this bike pretty hard and hit some nasty rocks in creek bottoms and never bent a rim. The frame is strong and has little flex. Sure the parts are entry level but no different than the bigger name brands. At one time back in the 90s GT was a big name in professional mountain biking for the Xgames.
