Current deal is a repost of this expired deal but at a slightly lower price: https://slickdeals.net/f/12135295-nest-protect-wired-or-battery-smoke-detector-2-pack-179?v=1

Mods, if you want to merge them that's fine. Wanted to repost to bring attention to the deal...didn't know how to reactivate an expired deal as alive and lower in price.

If you need more than one or two of these (i.e., to have all the 5-10 detectors in your house interconnected like you should) then beware of the short warranty on these units of 2 years (or 5 years if sold and installed by a "Nest Pro"). Buying from Costco does help the equation if their return policy doesn't exclude this item after a year.

On a positive note the carbon monoxide detector portion is rated for 10 year lifetime like other BRK and Kidde units.

Any idea if I could use one to update my entire house of about 10 wired "dumb" detectors?

Damn, this is tempting. I just replaced my wired one, and it's great. I like that they link together - was thinking I'd put an extra one in the garage to catch smoke there from the clothes drier and it would make them all go off in the house.

No, the Nest Protect does not interconnect with other brands (and they don't have other inexpensive detectors to interconnect with either).

I've been looking at these, the wired version for a while. I just haven't pulled the trigger because I have about 6 smoke detectors in the house (all wired) and I'm not sure it's a good idea to replace some and not all. Any drawbacks to replacing some and not all? I would possibly finish replacing them at a later date, maybe 2 at a time.

Also, a reviewer on Costco.com stated this..."I really like the features of these but you need to know that these shut themselves off by design when they are 10 years old. The 4 i bought from Costco were 11 months old when i recieved them, shorting me aboit 10% of the lifespan i paid for." Probably not that big of a deal (if this is true) but maybe we get even older ones.

FYI If you park cars in the garage then exhaust from your car can potentially set off the alarm. Best to place the detector just inside house by the door to the garage.

You want (and in some states are required) all detectors in your house interconnected; replacing half of the units will leave you with two independent partial detector setups.

Darn it, I figured I'd have to fork up some money if I wanted them. I guess I'll decide if I want the features this offers that bad, which are mostly "nice to have" features. The night light feature is neat but is it an extra ~$40 per unit over a regular First Alert brand neat?

The voice feature is nice too I guess. Telling you where the smoke/fire is at can save you seconds and that can mean saving your life.

I'm assuming these are second gen. correct?

Can someone help this dummy understand the benefits of these compared to the standard ones? I'm interested just want to make sure I know what I'm paying for.

Is that okay to replace wired old ones with Nest battery ones?
