I was first in line today to get an iPhone at my local Walmart. After being there for 2 hours a man passes by and asks "how many at&t iPhones do you have" he goes and asks and tells everyone that they only sell Verizon and U.S. Cellular phones and if you wanted the phones you had to switch to one of those two carriers. I asked again, I have att and don't want to switch and he responded with well you can't get a phone here then.

I asked which Walmart's sold at&t and no one knew. I went to one across town and luckily they only sold at&t and sprint. I was like 20th in line. And I asked everyone in line if the had at&t or sprint an like 5 or 6 of them did. I asked one of the employees again do you only sell at&t and sprint? They said yes, I asked is that common knowledge? He just responded with well people will just have to switch it f they want the gift card.

Ultimately I didn't get my iPhone xs by 3 or 4 people And I know some of the people are not going to get the phone once they're told they have to switch. Now I have to wait at target tomorrow morning.

Yup Walmart all over the map on this one. I went to one store that didn't have any phones then hustled to another one that did. Admittedly, the selection was pretty decent but absolutely no sprint phones. I drive back in a little while to complete the process. Hopefully that goes smooth.

I got iPhone X Space Gray 64GB at local Walmart in upstate NY
I did line upgrade on AT&T, not new line
Total after gift card $500 (plus $30 activation fee), if you count Walmart gift card as cash, which I do, I certainly spend more then that in a year at Walmart
Came at 5pm, was 4th in the line, activation started at 6pm, I was done by 6:40pm out with new phone in hand
Generally all who came between 5pm and 7pm where able to get what they need, Walmart stocked 5 phones each category (like 5 X 64GB, 5 X 256GB and so on), saw their locker box and they had maybe 50-60 in total
Only negative was huge Walmart crowd buying some crappy kids toys and no-name TVs

Yep, purchase went pretty smooth except for angry customers hassling the mobile person for incredibly random things. Gift card in hand which I used to buy a TV.

Misleading title. This is specific to the poster though I'm certain it's happened tens of thousands of times across the nation.

Wal-Mart hires the chaff of society and getting accurate information is always horrible. It's the hidden tax you pay for shopping there. That being said, the iphone gift cards are indeed real and being given out.
