That's not my understanding. It uses some of the NAND storage as RAM which is of course slower than RAM and wears out faster.

No, that's incorrect. Read this: https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...,5531.html Using NAND as RAM would first of all be slow as hell, and second of all probably wear it out in a few days.

Still a marked improvement over a sata ssd? Was planning on replacing my boot drive with this and nvme pcie 3 x4 looks great. Was actually going to buy this same one from newegg yesterday but price went up to 60 USD.

This is an M.2 slot drive. If you have an old laptop (I guess you'd need to define "old"), then it probably won't have an M.2 slot.
