This is a pretty solid deal. Got myself one and will use the $50 gift card towards an SSD and additional RAM. Makes for a pretty complete system at around $1,000, and with very little customization and upgrading required.

In gaming the most important performance comes from your graphics card in almost every title imaginable. Very few see any significant gains from additional cores, with the only big difference is the max cpu speed which does make a difference. That is slowly changing as gaming are getting more and more optimized with multi core usage and mutli thread but still biggest impact will be the graphics card and brute speed of the cpu.
The I3 has a higher speed than an I7. Does that mean the I3 is better for gaming? What about VR?

i3-8100 4 core @ 3.6GHz (same as I7-7700)
i5-8400 6 core @ 2.8GHz
i7-8700 6 core @ 3.2GHz

Yes if it wasn't for the fact that the I7 clock speed you listed is the base, when you game the brute portion kicks in and it goes into turbo mode. The turbo mode clock is way over 4ghz, so if you were looking at base speeds then yes unless your doing rendering and not gaming the I3 would probably perform very similar. There is still some leeway like I said with newer software taking advantage of more cores and threads. Thats why if you remember those old alienware small form factor gaming consoles, they almost all used i3's, the focus was on the graphics card. One thing I also forgot to mention it also depends on some games too, games that are heavy physics and are customized to offload more work to the cpu will suffer from less cores, but those are not extremely common as the gpu still does almost all the work in current games.

A few decent articles on it. You can google for a consensus on just about any blog or review site. Forums have too many people who think they know tech so its hard to get a straight answer from them.

I'll check out the articles. I bought a Samsung Odyssey+ and need a new PC to use it.

Would this be good for good video/music editing multitasking? Running an old HP laptop that is slow and really looking to change that.

Kinda odd this doesn't come with an ssd
Keep in mind that when this was manufactured a year+ ago, SSD prices were way higher than they are now.
