The DR-05 Portable Handheld Digital Audio Recorder from Tascam offers high-quality recording in a compact and lightweight design that anyone can use, and is ideal for musicians, teachers, journalists, videographers, and more.

The DR-05 records WAV or MP3 files at rates up to 24-bit/96 kHz to microSD or microSDHC cards for reliable, skip-free storage. A 2GB card is included so you can get started right away.
Integrated microphones capture clear stereo audio, while a 3.5mm stereo mic/line input lets you connect external mics and sound sources. The jack even provides plug-in power for mics that require it.
An integrated speaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack make it easy to listen to your recordings to make sure everything was captured perfectly. The large display screen shows vital information during recording and playback, while the intuitive controls provide quick and easy single-handed operation. The Peak Reduction feature will automatically set your recording level by listening to the audio input and adjusting for the best level. When used alongside the built-in limiter, unwanted distortion becomes a thing of the past.

The DR-05 includes other classic Tascam features, such as Variable Speed Audition, a level-align function, loop and repeat playback, self-timer recording, integrated editing, a chromatic tuner, and more. A USB 2.0 port allows you to connect the recorder to a computer to quickly transfer files. The DR-05 operates on a pair of standard AA batteries or via the included USB cable. A threaded socket provides convenient tripod mounting.

PhotoSavings.com has the same colors but in separate listings and the same tax free policy in all states except where they are based. BUT I prefer to get 10% more off with the discount code "HOLIDAY2018".

It's really used for very different purposes. If I understand, you mean the rode shotgun style mic? They are used for one directional sound recording like if you were filming an interview. Tascam makes a similar camera mountable shotgun mic. Here's a link to this same site with the same 10% off code (HOLIDAY2018) : https://photosavings.com/products...microphone

How good is this at capturing something like a high school band concert or a lecture?

Thanks! Was curious because the demo video on the product page shows as being used for recording video and audio separately, and then joining together in post production, which just adds a step over the direct audio recording with video via a shotgun mic. Curious to understand why people would choose this mic over a shotgun mic for this particular use case.

So, There are many reasons that one might prefer a set up like that over a shotgun mic for video. The first obvious reason would be the price. This is much cheaper. But also, in many situations, the quality would be much better than with a shotgun mic. In a situation where you don't have control over the subject of your video, the shotgun mic would usually be better. think streetside interview. However, where you could get your subject to wear the recorder on them and preferably with a lavalier mic, the quality would be far superior. This would also allow you to shoot at any distance where a shotgun mic is limited to only several feet. Take for example, a play where your subjects are on stage and far away from the camera, a shotgun mic would perform very poorly whereas this would be a perfect usage for the Dr-05. Syncing the sound with video may sound tedious to some but it's very simple and allows more flexibility. So, in summary, the DR-05, is a more versatile recorder than an on-camera shotgun mic so a lot of people would prefer it.

I would say that for a lecture it would perform well but regarding a musical performance, you would want something fancier to record all the nuances of music.

I've had one of these for many years. I pair it with a tascam st1 microphone. I use it for quick recordings of loud rock band rehearsals and it produces good recordings.
