Kind of a rant post, but oh well.

So yes, feel free to call it coincidence that this drops in price as new content releases. However, the new content is different from prior Destiny DLC in that it, by and large, you'll have access to most of the game.

To break it down, you'll still have access to/receive the following for free (released over the next 3 seasons):

Power level increases
Seasonal events (The Dawning, Crimson Days, Solstice of Heroes, some other spring one they haven't announced yet)
Iron Banner
New rewards (vanity, rank-based), weapons, some exotic quests, and some new triumphs and lore books
All other content as it exists prior to the Dec. 4 launch of Season 4

Annual pass must be purchased for the following:

Certain new weapons and gear that is strictly a part of the annual pass content

Example: Black Armory-specific gear

New raids
Additional exotic quests, triumphs, lore books, and bounties (Xur bounties, to be specific)
New matchmaking activity, and a "new gambit experience"
A couple other TBA items
Quests that tie into annual pass content

TL;DR

With Forsaken, you WILL be able to keep up with your friends/other players in terms of power level and access to a majority of the content in the game, including all existing raids, strikes, and anything else that was available to players as of 12/3, in addition to power level increases and other seasonal activities that will be open to all players.
Without the annual pass: you WILL NOT have access to some of the gear, new raids, and a few other activities as they're released throughout the next three seasons.

Personally, given the amount of content that Forsaken added, this seems like a pretty good deal to me. I've been a slightly-above-casual player and largely play solo, and I still haven't been through all of the Dreaming City stuff and have a ton of lore and triumph stuff to hunt down. I bought the annual pass, but did so way back and in hindsight would've waited had I known that I wouldn't even be through Forsaken before annual pass content started to drop.

This link will (or should...work has blocked the link for me now) give you a visual breakdown of the content to come and what is/isn't included:

This doesn't include the annual pass, whose content begins starting today. Just FYI for those considering, you'd still need to add the Annual Pass cost on top of this to be "up to date".

Not a coincidence that all the content before today dipped in price the day new content dropped.

Is there a deal on that package or do you foresee one soon-ish?

Ugh, couldn't resist. This is impulse buy territory for me.

Anyone else who wants to jump in and is looking for someone to play with, I'm willing to start from either the beginning or from the Forsaken expansion. Keep trying to get my friends to jump in on this but no one wants to thanks to all the bad press the game got.

Also, anyone know if this is separate codes for everything? I already own D2 and since it's not free anymore I'd like to give the code to someone else.

It'll be a code in a DVD case; I'm sure. They're shipping it to me, if that's what you're asking.
