This is PCIe 2x which my Mobo supports, too old for 4x. But I still want a 4x drive for when I upgrade.

Trying to figure out if this will work with my Ryzen 7 1700x/Gigabyte GA-AX370 BF deal? Not sure if is compatible.

According to the user manual it's got

1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and PCIe x4 (Note)/x2 SSD support)

so it should work fine.

aren't all m.2 slots pcie 4x? I don't think they make a 2x pcie m.2 slot. I think you're talking about the PCIe revision 1.0/2.0/3.0?

not sure where you are reading that?

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboa...fications/
2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x2 mode)
2 x PCIe 2.0 x1 *1
2 x PCI

Intel® Z97 chipset :
1 x SATA Express port, compatible with 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports
1 x M.2 Socket 3, , with M Key, type 2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE mode)

But even if that was the case all you need is a pci-e > m.2 adapter which is like $10 on amazon. But I still doubt the slot is not x4. I think your slot is PCI-e 2.0 x4.
