I've never played a Shin Megami Tensei game; I'm only familiar with the Persona series. I might get it, though.

Strange Journey is thematically similar, but it doesn't have any of the relationship/visual novel stuff. It's a hardcore, first-person dungeon crawler. It's VERY hard, but it's also very good. Persona has it's moments of difficulty, but this game is pretty brutal by comparison. This is an all-time low, and it's definitely a good game, but it is hard to recommend just given how niche and difficult it is. It's unique in the current landscape of JRPGs though.

SJ is hard? SMT is pretty easy if you keep weaknesses in check. Just treat it like a high level game of Pokemon all the time, it's not too bad. You'll get steam rolled if you're not paying attention, that's for sure.

Aside from that, it's a great price. The original was a lot of fun, and I'm not sure what Redux changes aside from a new character but if it's still basically like the original, it's my favorite SMT since it's not just another "Tokyo under attack" scenario.

I would have enjoyed Redux a lot more if they let you skip right to the new content. It's annoying having to replay the game.
