So only the snare is mesh, the toms are rubber pads.

True. The all-mesh TD11KV was recently available for $749 from Adorama but that deal is done

DIY acoustic to electric conversion is the only way to go. Roland is well made mediocrity. That said this is a great price for the mix of extra pads and a good enough module.

Add the AmEx $25 deal if you still have it. I waited to long for the KV. Might jump on this one instead. $200 isn't worth it for mesh heads.

Roland module and mesh snare are good, but this kit has rubber toms and I've read so-so reviews on the CY-5 & CY-8 symbols. For the money, I think the Alesis Surge ($500) is better value, especially for a beginner. I just bought one at Guitar Center with an 18% discount and free in-store pickup. I got the discount by calling in the order. It would have been 15%, but I added a drum amp (Simmons DA50) and it dropped the price on the kit to about $410. My boys will love it. Hope to upgrade to an all mesh Roland kit in the future. Just an FYI.
