Lighter alternative OS with capabilities somewhat similar to Windows 2008 Server for Media / Web Server?

Hi all,

I have a separate box which I use mainly as my plex media server, side web dev projects, and ftp running on windows server 2008. I realize that I do not utilize half the capabilities or functionalities of what something like windows server 2008 offers. It's light usage and is not shared with no more than 3 users. Is there anything else anyone would recommend for using as an OS?

Thanks.

Formerly NAS4Free, now XigmaNAS [xigmanas.com]
Run plex, samba shares, other lightweight apps like Dynamic DNS updater
It's based on the FreeBSD operating system.

depending on your processor you may want to look at windows home server 2011 you can get it for 40 bucks on ebay and it should offer all that you are looking for if you don't want to go with the free NAS route

except security updates stopped in 2016 it looks like. That sounds like a bad thing to use if it's exposed to the internet and acting as a server. WHS 2011 currently has known vulnerabilities that won't be fixed.

I think a flavor of linux that's supported is his best bet.
