Citizen Kane is a revered film because of the filmmaking ground that Welles broke while making it. Like many landmark works of art... many of the techniques that Welles invented or perfected have become commonplace in films today. When people first saw this film it was revolutionary in its technical style. So whole generations of filmmakers used these techniques because they were effective and efficient visual storytelling techniques. Now when you watch a modern film, Welles fingerprints are all over it... but unless you study filmmaking it's not obvious.

One good example is the "rack focus." Transitioning from focus on the foreground subject to a person or object in the background. This is commonplace today but Welles pioneered it and viewers were thrilled and awed by new techniques like this. As far as the storyline... I think you need to really be into allegorical, cerebral, quiet, serious dramas from this era to really dig it. For most movie fans today this will seem dry and boring. But if you read about film history up to the era of Citizen Kane and you know something about Orson Welles and the history of newspaper media and general culture of this time period... this film can become a deep, thought provoking viewing experience.

Remember... it's totally fine to NOT like any movie. If you don't like it, you don't like it. It doesnt mean you are lacking in any area. Just remember to visit the classics later in life. Sometimes books or movies come alive to you in later periods of your life.

Is this a good price? Do you recommend buying now or think it's better to wait?

Wondering if the anniversary edition is the copy that was only sent to movie critics?

Because the rest of us got the 'overrated' version
Agreed. I love old movies but I couldn't ever get into this one.

Seriously, a '70th anniversary' edition of something whose creators and stars are all long-dead? The only 'saving' here is by the companies that keep lobbying to jack up copyright terms.

Things like Citizen Kane should be in the public domain by now!

Well they remaster it and add documentary stuff to it. If you get the Night of the Living Dead it is all scratched up and bad sound. You pay for the remastered versions.
