B5 is a series designed around a set story, with a beginning, middle and end. It was a unique concept for US TV at the time. Viewing order is important. What happens in one episode is not forgotten by the characters in the next. Things that seem inconsequential in seasons one and two come back around with major plot twists and changes. The show was always planned to be a 5 season series but because the network it was airing on (PTEN) went under, they weren't sure if they would get to do a 5th season while Season 4 was shooting. They shot the series finale as the season 4 finale, but when they got a last minute deal for a new season on TNT, an alternate S4 finale was shot and the series finale was moved to the end of Season 5. Season 5 is a little disjointed because they rushed to get the major story arcs completed in Season 4 thinking it would be the last.

It's very good, still a favorite of mine, especially for the era in which it was made. It's not perfect and definitely shows it's age 25+ years later. Early Season 1 is rough. But about 10 episodes in it will click and you'll be teased with something bigger and then it hits it's stride. Seasons 2 and 3 and the finale are all excellent.

But yes, it's also on Prime and is currently airing on Comet TV too. There are ways to get this for less than $30 but I would still classify this as a good deal if you wish to own the series. This package, and the Prime video package does not include the made for TV movies that also aired on TNT when Season 5 was picked up. Of these, I'd say "In the Beginning" is worth watching and it's best watched in between seasons 4 and 5 otherwise you'd spoil events revealed over the course of the series.

Season 5 sucked because they weren't expecting to get renewed after season 4. So they wrapped up at season 4. They even filmed the series finale during season 4. When they were renewed, they shelved that finale and aired it after season 5. Sucked is a relative term. Sucked as compared to season 4. There were some very good story lines in season 5. The telepath story line was bad though.

For me at the time, this was the best sci-fi series to date. It had an arc, which was so very different from everything else. Season 1 started a bit slow but midway through it starts to get better and then episode Babylon Squared got me hooked. As the seasons moved along, more episodes were arc related and by season 4 every episode was arc related. They caused DS9 to move into a pseudo arc (dominion war). Before then DS9 and TNG were pretty much one-off episodes, with an occasional 2 parter here and there. B5 had a complete story to tell and it was amazing.

The other unique thing about this show was that the creator was available on NNTP to discuss the episodes (JMS). That was an awesome time. Fans could directly interact with him. The only rule was that you could not pitch story ideas. Because they could be sued if that idea came to fruition.

Since then, I would add The Expanse and Altered Carbon along with Babylon 5 into my favorite sci-fi of all time.

Wondering where the reboot is of this. In all I liked the series even if it skimped on some areas that really could have spent a lot more time on. It was available on prime if you just wanted to watch the series. Movies weren't on last time I checked.

The series is still available on Amazon Prime.

Anyone know what the normal iTunes price is for this?

Not sure about the normal price, but it looks like it was FP for $50 at VUDU (and it's that price at VUDU again now) and $30/season on Google Play. Thanks for pointing out it's available on Prime streaming!

One thing to research is is whether the digital version is in widescreen format. The series DVDs include the show in widescreen. There is no current Blu Ray version.

B5 is never going to be available in HD. Even the DVDs suffered due to the fact that they only have the video sent to the broadcasters in SD.

It could be done like the Star Trek remasters but since the ST:TNG was a net money loser this would be probably only a labor of love. It would need massive crowdfunding.
