The quality of titles they offer doesn't warrant such a long subscription imo. Other than Harry Potter and a couple other quality novels, it's a scrap heap of romance and self-help books and other nonsense.

They have some good series. If you pay careful attention to reviews you will find some good authors - whose books just never hit mainstream. There are a lot of authors out there and it is difficult to get noticed in the publishing world. I found some of the books on this service to be much better than established authors.

That being said, there is a lot of crap too. If you pick up a book indiscriminately without paying attention to reviews there is a high chance it'll be bad. Amazon is more interested in advertising the number of books on the store, but not really concerned with quality control. Other than their efforts to curtail scam books (which ask you to jump to the last page, since royalty is paid by % of people finishing the book), there is no real vetting for quality.

I would advise getting this only for a few months. Be selective about what you pick up, and plan to make the most of your membership in those months. Then pick up a few months again after 2 years. Even getting an annual membership is not worth it in my opinion (and absolutely stay away from the 2 yr membership). In between membership months plan to vary your book sources - your library will definitely have a better ebook collection, and you can download books to your Kindle. Take advantage of ebook sales, and if you like an author support him/her by the occasional full price purchase.

If you get the 2 yr membership, over time you'll find yourself reading lower quality books. Your tastes will deteriorate without you realizing it. Don't do that to yourself Smilie.

Yes, there is. If she's added as house member to your Amazon account (has her own Amazon account) then you can share the Kindle Unlimited subscription.

In for 2yr. Wife seems to like it and I accidentally let my last trial lapse, so have been paying $9.99 for a couple of months anyway. Thanks + rep, OP!

Yeah, this reminded me that I got a six month subscription for free with my new Paperwhite. I just activated it and I haven't seen much of interest yet outside of a cookbook and a few comics. This seems like it caters to the type of people who read 2 or 3 romance or sci fi books a week and aren't very picky about quality.

Since it's so easy to accumulate digital credits and free/discounted Amazon credits to purchase a-la-carte, this hardly seems worth it. You'd have to read a lot just to break even. If you barely come out ahead, it was a bad deal you should have avoided. On top of that, a-la-carte allows you to pick high quality titles. It's like a buffet pass vs. using cash to buy steak dinners.
