Careful with the Taxi drivers in Italy specifically Rome. They start their meters as soon as you call them and sometimes they screw around to get to you slower. By the time they get to you the fare is already high sometimes.

Most people advice to get a taxi from the taxi rank or using the mytaxi app. You have to be careful with both of these as well, sometimes the drivers at the taxi ranks are aggressive and are "borrowing" the actual white taxi owners cab. Make sure you ask them to start/reset the meter (a lot of them will tell you its broken). As for the taxi app they also start the fare as soon as you ask for one so if its 1-2 miles away you are paying for them to get to you but you can cancel and try and get one closer with the app.

Last way to avoid some of this is if you are staying at a normal hotel and not an air bnb and just have the hotel call you a cab. Most of the time the hotels have deals with these cab drivers and they wont start charging you until they pick you up.

Please be careful of pickpockets. Scan your passport and email it to yourself. Put 100 Euros in your shoe in case of an emergency. It is a beautiful and fairly safe city but there are plenty of scams.

Having just been there I recommend using the metro to get around especially if your hotel is centrally located, cabs have to use the roads and a straight line isn't always possible due to the city having really narrow roads closures and congestion also be aware there a 3E for 3 star 6E for 4 star and 7E for 5 star hotel stays per night per person

Yah, but the metro isn't anywhere as useful as in say Paris, but that is expected with all the historical sites in Rome.
