I wonder if I should return my OP laptop for this one since it seems to be the same...

Isn't this more expensive?

The price is pretty good, but iirc, Newegg mail-in rebate is not good

OP has 144hz screen and the quality of that screen and lack of red lighting and mechanical keyboard and not a mushy "steelseries" one makes it a much better buy, unless you like red. My experience with MSI support has been hit or miss so I wouldn't say the support would be any better either.

How does this compare to the 799 Walmart overpowered deal that keeps popping up? Would be using to run the htc vive virtual reality system...

In my opinion the OP deal is better, basically the same components with a better screen (OP has 144hz vs just 60hz in the msi) other than that there shouldn't be much difference performance wise.

Warning, the screen is fkn' garbage compared to the OP screen..

It's 45% ntsc 60hz,

Which means, ~ 65% srgb, vs the 92% srgb on the OP

This also has a weak ass wifi card, 1x1 intel 9462 vs ___ 2x2 intel 9560 on the OP.

If the OP is $790

This should price out around $680

Neither system has the gfx card suitable for vr
Incorrect. The 1060 is the recommended minimum spec card for both HTC and Oculus. You can't crank up some of the settings (e.g. oversampling) but it's perfectly fine. I personally used the OP 15+ with a Rift for the past few weeks with no issues whatsoever.

Packs the power of a 1060 with a 60hz display? No thanks.
The "power" of a 1060? Don't get me wrong, 1060 isn't exactly a slouch and pretty good, but it's not exactly a 144hz mandated card. You're only gonna get those kinda frames if you drop quality in most modern shooters, which is fine if you want that but it doesn't make this screen a poor match. Anyone playing single player or non fps competitive would be served just fine with this combo.

Yeah but a 120hz would've been perfect with maybe a $50 price increase
