So there is often a debate on these threads why these bulbs are so expensive and color&white vs white only. Or that there are other lesser known brands or knock offs that are cheaper. I dont dispute that but you get a lot of extras with the brand Phillip's hue. In the end they may not be worth it for some, but for many it is worth spending extra for "the best"
I added this comment to previous threads and some people found it a bit helpfu but it is more around the color versionl:

Why Hue?. Let's break it down.

First off anyone stating you can find color or white only bulbs like these for one tenth the price listed here is an idiot. Complete lie. The only way you could do that is buy pre-colored bulbs. I.e. a bulb that is always green when you turn it on.

2nd why are these so expensive? Well the retail price is indeed expensive at $50 per bulb for color and $15 per bulb for white. However if you shop around on slick deals and others you can get these frequently for less.

But why so expensive? First off you are paying for innovation. Hue was one of the first of it's kind that fully integrated with Alexa and is fully customizable lights with an app and hub.
Why is that important? Well a couple of things. First off they include some of the best tech and features that few others have and have learned from past mistakes and needs of customers to make a truly excellent product.
Here is a few of the features that few other bulbs can do.
1. Color bulbs can change to any of 16.4million colors at any time by voice or app commands.
2. 10W 800 lumen brightness gives you excellent light, like a 60W incandescent bulb.
3. Single hub can support 50 bulbs (63 max per hub)
4. Support for Alexa, Apple homekit, google home, IFTTT, and tons of 3rd party apps to change colors in your home to music during Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, disco party, etc.
5. Bulbs are built tough and use high quality parts. Cheap knockoffs have higher reports of failure after a year or so.
6. The bulbs talk to each other. So if you have them in a long line down your house, they bounce off each other the wifi signal in case that last bulb outside at the end of the house has sketchy wifi, it still gets commands from other nearby bulbs.
7. Widely available at retail stores and tons of support. If you buy a cheap knockoff at $25, the only seller is likely ebay or Amazon. But what happens when they go out of business or you cant find them later? Hue is available at home depot, best buy, target, amazon, etc etc. If anyone will be around to support and develop more products they will so gives you confidence for future upgrades and all on the same app rather then having 2 or 3 different apps and bulbs from different places.
8. each bulb is dimmable via app or voice from 1% to 100%

Back to price. $50 is retail, but through deals like these I have found you can pay between $35-$40 often. Refurbished are also sometimes available for $25-31. This brings the price down to more reasonable.
The white are often down to $10 each, in fact they are right now I believe.
Color costs more because it requires more LED lights and hardware to represent accurate color, and that costs 3x more.

In the end, these things are a fun toy if you have Alexa or google home. Are they necessary? No. But they look good and are a ton of fun for holidays or parties or to program to do things like:

If it rains, then turn lights on to purple,

If it snows, then turn lights on to blue.
If it gets above 95degrees, then turn lights on to red,
If wind gusts above 50mph, then turn lights on to grey,
At sunset turn lights on to orange,
at midnight turn all the lights in the house off automatically (great for kids who are always leaving lights on in the house)
At 6pm turn porch light on a color loop (rainbow gradual changing colors every few seconds)
When my cellphone GPS gets within 1 mile of home, turn on porch or kitchen lights.

You get the idea? Fully customized light control based on any number of conditions. THAT is awesome!

The 20% is off the maximum discount of $20, therefore it is $107 (tax applied) for new Google Express users. Unless you know of some other trick to score it for $94?

The old starter kit came with a 4th bulb instead of the dimmer switch. MSRP on the switch is lower than the MSRP of a bulb.

I got this version of the starter kit with two Google home minis for 140 or 150 in 2017. I'd like to add more bulbs, but this isn't quite the same level of a deal.
