Kuru toga has the feature which rotates the lead every time you lift the pencil up and you always have sharp point!

I have the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 as my daily carry for note taking. One of my favorite features is the retractable tip so that it doesn't get damaged or stab me. It's currently less than a dollar more than the one posted by OP.

Excellent pencil, I've owned 3 of them. Has some solid weight to it (made completely out of brass) and good knurled grip. Just note if it gets dropped and lands on it's point the metal sleeve that holds the lead is likely toast.

Are you sure what you are talking about is 500 not 600? It seems 500 is mostly made of plastic while 600 is metal.

A good mechanical pencil but, for me, nothing beats the Pilot S10.

According to their website, the 500 is mostly plastic with the grip being metal:

The Rotring 600 is made completely out of metal, this is the 500 which is plastic or composite. The 600 is about $20 and a good choice for a professional (who probably already has one).

These are great for use at a fixed drawing/drafting table. The biggest gripe people have is that the skinny tip gets bent, then you throw it away.

For those on the go, the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 is a good choice for under a buck more, all metal with a retractable tip. I've had a few and these and they rock too.

Forgot to mention - I'm in for 2 of these, thanks OP!

Just a college student passing by. Are these good for just an average student who doesn't do any drafting? Would the weight maybe interfere with note-taking?

You might also like the Uni Kuru Toga line of mechanical pencils for note taking. My favorite is the "pipe slide" but there are many to choose from.

How does the uni kuru toga pipe slide feel when writing? One of the review says it feels more loose due to the rotating mechanism requiring some room.
