Backwards compatible isn't exactly right. USB-C is the physical connector, like the old USB A, USB B, mini-B, micro-B, etc. Many technologies share the USB-C connector, including USB 3.1 and TB3, while others are capable of using it, like Ethernet, HDMI, DIsplayPort etc.

A lot of laptops that have true TB3 ports also have an alternate mode for DisplayPort over USB-C, or HDMI over USB-C, which can allow for these all-in-one hubs that are far cheaper than a true TB3 dock.

Unfortunately not ALL USB-C devices are going to support all of those protocols on all USB-C ports, or any of them. This type of hub works on many laptops, but not all. Some USB-C ports are just plain vanilla USB 3.1 data ports.

USB-C is basically the new all-in-one port, replacing display (VGA, HDMI, DP, DVI...), audio, power, and data. If you're an SDer of discretion, you can also look for thunderbolt 3, which is backwards compatible with USB-C. With enough bandwidth, you can plug one cable into your laptop and get all the required connectivity and power, hence the docking station.

Anker is the premium brand. But Aukey has good products too.

I haven't tested it myself, but he reviews for the 7-in-1 say that it will trigger Dex mode only on the Note 9. For other Samsung phones, it will only do screen mirroring.

I got the 5 in 1 with the HDMI, hopefully this will help me easily view dash cam footage saved to a micro sd card on my Note 8 or to a monitor if necessary. Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

No, dex is proprietary to Samsung. Correction, on 8 series phones. 9 can do dex without the dock so it should work.
False, third party products trigger dex mode, like my current USB C Hub.
