Check the list of included forms before you start. It includes all commonly used forms for itemized deductions, including capital gains and investments.

Also check the list of forms that are NOT supported. Notably, it does not support multiple state filings, part-year state filing, foreign earned income, married filing separately returns in community property states, or state filing without a federal filing.

If you're just doing 1040EZ and have no deductions turbo tax is free too. But on an itemized return it is more than adequate with some extra reading and due diligence in figuring taxes in two different software.

I've used Credit Karma's tax return service the last 2 years, filing 1040's. Used TurboTax to verify refund amounts / amount due and they matched. Definitely recommend their service for free.

Free comes at a cost, you are giving away even more data about you to CK.

Keep in mind CK makes money by selling your data to advertisers or thru lead generation. I do use their service but not sure will use them for tax preparation.

Have not had much luck with their service, stock sales seemed to be the issue, but there are a bunch of other limitations, I work in one state but live in another. They can't handle that for some reason.

If another online tax return gets you more refund or pay less with same info, you get the diff plus $100. But that doesn't mean this tool easily guides you to everywhere you should be inputting data.

They don't calculate ACA penalties for short term coverage lapses correctly. They wanted me to pay a penalty that didn't apply to me. I ended up using a free after rebate TurboTax that caught it.

Credit karma's tool wasn't good.
Fine for everything but stock transactions for me... that was miserable typing it in and then the website timing out

They support it if you have an extremely easy one, but if you file form 1116, that's not on their list of supported forms, no.

So... What do they do with all that data? I mean they need to make money somehow. And what if they get hacked? Can't get around the IRS, but I don't need to expose all my data to even more preying eyes...
