Gets me every time when I realize it's not the "definitive" special edition. Seriously not sure why the two versions continue to coexist.

Is a good price nonetheless.

I believe the Special Edition is the definitive one?

I would absolutely recommend to NOT buy this. The "Legendary" edition is the original Skyrim + DLCs. Now there's a "Special" edition that includes all the DLCs but also has many fantastic game engine updates. Most important change is probably projectiles have effectively infinite range, so no more watching them vanish because they went too far. Buy the Special edition.

How are the mods for the Special Edition? Last time I checked, most mods were compatible with Legendary Edition, but not for the Special Edition.

If mods matter Legendary is better. That's why I won't get the definitive special edition and stick to this one.

While the Special Edition improves on the original in terms of visual/gameplay quality, I wouldn't go as far as to not recommend it. If the Special Edition with all the DLCs were offered at the same price, then sure, but I don't think the updates in the Special Edition are game-changing (I've played both for hundreds of hours). The original Skyrim also has more mod support (more time-tested and more mods in general).

For those that never played, I highly recommend. Whether it's this version or the Special Edition, you can't go wrong.

Edit: For those that already have Skyrim, for the love of God stop buying it so that Todd has to make something else.

I already own this on Switch but am tempted to dive into all the mods on PC. I have a lot more ideas than time, though.

In addition to what has been said, there are mods for the original game that enhances the graphics more than the special edition can ever dream of. So if graphics is your only reason for wanting the special edition, then now you know that the original with graphics-enhancing mods will make it just as good, and even better, than the special edition. Of course, unless, you want to keep the game vanilla.

The Special Edition from what I've read changed to a 64 bit game engine. The standard 32 bit engine of the vanilla original allowed you to only render using 4GB of memory so advanced mods would sometimes crash. There were also a few visual enhancements for the Special Edition but the big upgrade was the switch to a 64 bit engine.

On Steam if you owned the original game (plus maybe the DLC) they upgraded to the Special Edition for free, so it would show up in your library as an extra game title entry. I don't know if this is still true as I don't believe they sell the base vanilla version anymore.

EDIT: Getting Special Edition was a limited time offer so I don't think I'd recommend grabbing this unless you want just one more edition of the game running the old engine for some old mods.

Skyrim mods are available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. I also have the Switch edition and still play it from time to time, like all Switch titles portability is a great thing. I believe the reason the Switch likely doesn't support mods is for it's limited storage and RAM compared to the other consoles. If you are interested in mods and have a semi-current PC I would recommend picking up the Special Edition (not Legendary). Mods are available from everything from more photo realistic visuals to gameplay enhancements to additional story content. Granted there is a lot of content in the game already but it's fun to try out some of the many great community mods available. Some can be game-breaking though so keep hold of an old save just in case.
