CAREFUL ON WHAT VERSION YOU BUY

NOTE: ALL THIS APPLIES TO THE DOWNLOADABLE OR CD VERSIONS. THE ONLINE PAID VERSION OF DELUXE APPEARS NOT TO HAVE SCHEDULE C

Block is doing some shady marketing to push people to the more expensive versions they may not need. Basically ignore the comparison chart go to the version page and see what forms it supports for the true picture. If it has all the forms listed you need, it will do your taxes. . See below for more detailed explanation.

Every year we get good intentioned members here on SD that do not understand this recommending higher versions based on the chart. It costs other members unnecessary expense
Lot of misinformation on what version will do what bouncing around and I hope I can clear it up a little.

H&R Black is doing a little semi shady marketing to try to get you to get use a higher level version. The Chart comparing versions is almost worthless. Forget the chart they show, instead on the version comparison chart page, click on the different versions and see the supported forms link to get a true picture of what each version will handle. If it supports the forms you need it will work for you. The higher versions may add some feature or guidance that they stress in the chart. The chart makes it appear you may need the next higher version when you don't.

A good example of this is that the chart is causing the confusion and makes it seem Deluxe will not do Schedule C or self employment income.

From the chart for the Premium version this is checked.
Quote :
Maximize deductions for self-employment income (Schedule C)
This feature is unchecked on the chart for Deluxe.

This makes it appear that Deluxe does't do Schedule C and Premium does. Not true, it is just an added feature that will make it easier for you to find deductions supposedly. May be another interview section, or ask you some questions along the line of did you spend anything on this type of expense. It's generally not very useful, if you have any idea of what your deductions are, the Deluxe Schedule C walk-through is included and will guide you right through.

From the supported forms page. for the Deluxe version we see it does do Schedule C
  • Form 1040 Individual Income Tax Return
  • Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement
  • Form 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement
  • Form 1098-E Student Loan Interest
  • Form 1098-T Tuition Payment
  • Form 1099-DIV Dividends and Distributions Income
  • Form 1099-G Certain Government Payments

  • Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses
  • Schedule EIC Earned Income Credit
  • Schedule SE Self-Employment Tax
  • Schedule 8812 Additional Child Tax Credit
NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE FULL LIST. See below for the FULL LIST

Schedule C is handled fine by Deluxe

Deluxe works fine for me. I itemize, am self employed and file a Schedule C, wife receives a W2 from her company, have capital gains, IRA, SEP 401K, stocks etc. In other words a fairly complicated return and Deluxe handles my situation.

Here is the full list of supported forms and you will see that unless you have a very complicated return or some obscure form that is needed Deluxe will most likely work for you. Don't fall for shady marketing and save some money.

Have there been versions/deals in the past that include State e-File in the price? Usually can get a good deal, but then have to pay the additional $20 when it comes to that.

I think you're missing something here. The box even shows that the Premium includes State. In fact, I've never seen Premium without State. So to answer your question, the Premium version does include State.

Also, some states will let you e-file for free via their own state site, which is pretty easy. Ohio for example is really easy and doesn't charge anything.

Are you sure I remember Deluxe+ state for $18 but not Premium. I think this is the cheapest for Premium so far.

I hate seeing people get screwed into paying loads for tax prep because companies like Intuit and and H&R block lobby to make filing taxes a pain in the ass. Most people do not have particularly complex tax needs, and 70% of people in the US qualify for free tax preparation based on income. Feel free to copy/paste this info wherever relevant.

If you make less than $66,000 in Adjusted Gross Income you qualify for free tax preparation. Below are some resources.

The best resource I know of is the non-profit The United Way. They offer tax preparation using H&R Block Deluxe. This allows you to file your Federal returns and up to 3 state returns for free. State filling is where you'll generally get charged a premium, and the Deluxe version they offer is a step up from H&R Block's "free" offering. Check it out here:
https://www.myfreetaxes.com

Different H&R block versions for reference: https://www.hrblock.com/tax-software/

While you can produce your state return, you may not be able to e-file for free. You can certainly print and mail your return for free, however. Many states also offer their own free e-file solutions. Here is some info on state returns I was able to dig up:
https://www.mymoneyblog.com/free-...tates.html [mymoneyblog.com]

If for some reason you'd prefer not to use the United Way/H&R Block, the IRS has a list of free tax preparation websites here:
https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-f...s-for-free [irs.gov]

If you need more assistance the IRS makes volunteers available to assist people in doing their returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, and they offer assistance to older adults through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program. Find a location near you here:
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/f...volunteers [irs.gov]

Many city and county office also have free tax preparation available to citizens at libraries and government offices throughout tax season. Check your local government website.

Additional resources:

Contact your local IRS office or make an appointment for in-person help.

The AARP offers assistance to low and moderate income individuals with no age limit. Get info here:

My thought exactly, at the end last year I had to pay $20 to file my state return. I remember that some tax software used to include that years ago...Taxact for example. Is that something no longer included with any Tax software...the E-file I mean?
